Really very helpful thank you all very much, definitely won't stay in a hotel as this seems to eat up quite a chunk of money and have started looking into the cheaper options, I've since found out £440 of the £1280 was on their hotel accommodation,I didn't know there was a Ritz in Marseille.
There aren’t many 5 star hotels in Marseille and it’s one of the cheapest cities in France to stay in if you look at bookings.com

I suspect its reputation precedes it . Too much crime

Even the intercontinental you can get for under £300 per night which is super good value for a hotel of that calibre .

It should have been the following. Note: all car expenses were split four ways, so what I detail below is my quarter share.

Match Ticket - £27

LGW Parking - £11
LGW dinner - £20
Flight LGW - Geneva return - £63

Hire car incl. insurance - £36
Tolls - £17
Fuel - £25
Parking - £4

Uber to hotel - £5
Hotel - £45
Uber back to airport to get car - £3

Food and drink - £20

Total: £238

However, due to our hotel not having any rooms for us, I additionally spent:

Taxi to try and find another hotel - £15 (third share)
Hotel room - £53 (third share)

I'm expecting to get a refund back for the original hotel booking and, hopefully. some sort of contribution to the extra expenses paid out to find another room.

These trips can be as expensive and exotic as your wallet allows.

Early bookings and shrewd choices can make a mountain of difference.

Also depends if you want to post a photo of each course of your dining on social media.

Btw, there's a splendid Indonesian in Amsterdam, book early to avoid disappointment!

You're the third person who had trouble with a pre-booked room. Was it through booking.com? I'm trying to get a refund at the moment
