whats a unit?

It's actually a lot easier to work out than the government makes out.

A 'unit' of alcohol under the government's definition is 10ml of pure (100%) alcohol. To work out the number of units all you have to do is multiply the volume of each drink in litres by the strength in %.

So one litre of 40% whisky will contain 1 x 40 = 40 units.

A 750ml (0.75 litre) bottle of 12% wine will contain 0.75 x 12 = 9 units.

A pint (568 ml, or 0.568 litres) of 5% beer will contain 0.568 x 5 = 2.84 units.

Etc...

I haven't been adding up the alcohol total, but I have drunk in around 160 different bars and cafés so far in 2010 - for work. What do I win (apart from cirrhosis)?

I very rarely touch a drop of alcohol during the week but I worked it out once, on average I'll consume well over the weekly recommended unit intake in the first 3 hours of being out on a Friday. Then repeat it the following night.

Probably why I'm always skint and ill.

Doesn't help that I recycle my alcohol by consuming my own piss too.

the maximum units figure is a figure plucked out of the air by the Government and holds no medical grounds to it.

I think it's pretty obvious that drinking too much is bad for you.

I'm zero tolerance when at work. That's 3 months without a drop.
I find now when I get home I can't handle very much at all.

Same - zero tolerance when at work.
However, on my days / nights off I used to love a few cold beers and a bottle of red. But recently I stopped drinking altogether. Hard at first, but can't believe how just much better I feel for it.

I think if I was a family Man with kids I wouldn't drink much at all. As it is I am single with no dependants and have no responsibilities so

What the hell.

More than I should based on the guidelines, but I am not conscious of any effect on my health. Most of my drinking is around meals and always in the evening.

Monday - Thursday; about 12 units
Friday - Sunday; about 24 units (much less if any driving is involved)

36 in total

That drinking level will add 5 years to your life expectancy FACT. Teetotalers will die 4 years before your moderate drinking and that is a scientific FACT.
