A few years back, I was on a work trip somewhere up in Berkshire, and they put on a pub quiz in the evening to keep people entertained. Our team was formed of a bunch of strangers who happened to be staying at the same venue. A question came up in the quiz about where you'd find the inscription "Standing on the shoulders of giants" and this guy on the team decided the answer was on a big statue of famous England rugby players outside Twickenham.

I remembered going to a game at Twickenham the year before and having my picture taken in front of said statue, so I dug the photo out to show him afterwards. He looked at it, peered again more closely, and then, giving me my phone back, pointed himself out in the background of my picture. I thought he was on the wind-up until he produced a photo of himself at the same match, wearing exactly the same outfit as when he was standing about six feet behind me in the photo

(He was wrong in the pub quiz though: the answer is "around the outside edge of a two pound coin" )

I often wonder about the butterfly effect. Many here may be married now because of a chance meeting in a nightclub for example. Supposing they hadn't gone that night. What would their life look like all these years later ?

Chance is an amazing thing!

After being married to an English girl for 29 years things finally fizzled out and we divorced.
Then while was free and single I met a woman who was living in England but born and grew up on the 'other side' so to speak. As Estonia was occupied by the Soviets when she was young.
When I was a child I remember we were made to be afraid the Soviets would drop the bomb on us. At the same time for her they really knew nothing about the world outside.
We've been together 13 years now and I always think what are the chances that I was able to meet her in the first place?
I guess everything is for a reason.

My mum was a patient on a TB ward in the 1950s in London. In the 1990s she worked at a children’s home in Seaford. One day she was chatting to a female colleague who said she’d also had TB back in the day in London. My mum took a photo in the next day of herself on the ward, her colleague was in the photo, in a bed two along from hers.

Another strange thing though as this thread is in the travel category. Me and a friend backpacked in Asia and Australia in 1989. We met another Swedish guy outside the Australian Open centre court in Melbourne and started to chat for a while. A couple of weeks later we ran into him again, way up north in Cairns. We spent about 6-7 weeks in Australia and a couple of days before leaving me and my mate had a burger at some McDonalds in Kings Cross, Sydney. Guess who's walking by, third time we met him.

We were both going to Thailand but we hadn't decided exactly where we were going and said goodbye. After a couple of days in Bangkok we went up north to Chiang Mai for about two weeks. One day we heard someone shouting, "Not those Swedes again". There he was, he had been isolated in a hotel room for four days with some stomach issues and the first time he leave the hotel he bumped into us! More beers and another goodbye.

My mate and I continued down south by train, took the boat out to Koh Samui and stayed there for a month. One day we decided to go to a city on the other side of the island. We were walking around, came to a crossroad. Left or right? Think we turned right. That's were we met him for the fifth time. He came on a motorbike, had we turned left we would probably have missed him. I still can't believe this ever happened, just crazy! Now back to work!

Because I am married to someone who‘s only interest in football is looking at the score to see what mood I return home in, I go to a lot of away games on my own, often speaking to fellow Brighton fans who are willing to listen. Away at one of the FA games last season I got talking to this fascinating fella with a strong Australian accent, who was a Brighton fan. Turns out he was born in Brighton but parents had move to Australia when he was very young. He had always followed the fortunes of the club growing up, but now he had returned to live in Brighton and became a season ticket holder.
