Two, both "trainers" (I think, depending on the exact definition) as my knees cant handle regular shoes.

1 pair of falling to bits trainers for muddy/thorny work in the garden.
1 pair of good trainers, soon to be relegated to the above, as I will buy a new pair.
Ultra warm Timberland boots bought for last December’s trip to Lapland …. proved invaluable.
Pair of smart shoes for funerals/interviews, very rarely worn.
A pair of smart shoes for social occasions.
Wellies in the garage, probably just worn for one week of work in torrential rain years ago.

I love the comfort of trainers.

The old pair of Skechers now for chores and driving to work.
Smart black shoes for formal.
1 pair DeWalt boots for work.

Easier to count the Mrs' by weight rather than pairs.

Just now on French TV they were discussing waste and having things you don't need

Now my French wife is always saying how scruffy I am compared with her compatriots

And in this piece on French TV ,apparently the average frenchman has 18 pairs of shoes!

I currently have 3 pairs and a pair of trainers

Three pairs is ridiculous; unless you have a very dull life how can you cover all the situations that modern life throws at you? I admit I have way more than I actually need, but I can cover without embarrassment every occasion with 20 plus pairs...
