IIRC we didnt play that badly for that game but went behind and then when chasing a goal in a cup tie conceded a 2nd. We then had no option other than to go s..t or bust and go for goals with Brian Powney playing as a sweeper in the centre circle and purely through pushing forward got caught twice more on a breakaway so it finished 0-4

First game I haven't stayed behind to applaud the team at the end.

It really was poor, but no the players don't need to apologise.

By the end of the game, by my count, we had seven of our first team (semi) regulars on the pitch.

There was a 20k crowd watching that rubbish and I don't buy the very flimsy argument that they were all tired. SW had had a similarly heavy programme over Christmas.

If GP can't motivate the first team to care enough to put in a shift for 20k supporters then I worry about his and their attitudes.

We used to play 46 games in the Championship and still managed to do pretty well in the Cup!

We put out a team full of kids in the Carabao and were totally overrun.

Personally, I won't be going to any more cup games unless I'm assured that the club/team actually care about them......

I suggested that 'some' of the starting XI might have been fatigued, and if you read my post again, I also hinted that I firmly believed the team were not as up for this as their wages should necessitate. Now; I'm not saying this is how things should be, moreover that this (sadly) is the way the PL (and it's money) has contributed to the slide in genuine interest and engagement from the smaller PL teams in the domestic cups. Survival is absolutely all that matters, financially its vital and (again) although this is deeply depressing it's an all too stark reality. Graham Potter will have been given a simple remit: improve the paying style, incorporate the academy players, and survive. I doubt the cups got a mention. As an intelligent man he probably heeded the lesson of CH and his downfall, which the FA cup almost certainly contributed to, and rather pertinently didn't count for anything when he was abruptly sacked.

I say again, I am not surprised by the result or the performance and although it wasn't on (in terms of effort) - if we survive and finish about 10th, I doubt this thread will surface again.

I'd say the players who hadn't featured much, know their days are numbered and just didn't turn up. This massively contributed to the muted display and perhaps took GP by surprise, hence the subs etc. The clear first teamers too, I suspect, were told to avoid injury and suspension at all costs. Why? well Everton and Villa are two primary reasons.

The cups, for clubs like us, with limited second strings are very unlikely to result in anything other than fatigue and shattered dreams - Playing our first team, and running the risk of Dunk or Ryan or Propper of God forbid Mooy getting sidelined... I can hear the voices suggesting we should have played the reserves instead! You cannot win. Sure if we'd gone all out and won, with no injuries great, very great... but GP played the percentages and lost... I'd have done the same, especially if it gives us just a little bit more chance of a point away at Everton.

• Playing against a decent Championship side who are going to be hugely more up for it than us.

• Likely to be a bizarre A/B team that won't have ever played together before, still getting used to a new style of play under Potter.

• First teamers who are playing would be no doubt on instruction or at least have playing on their mind to avoid injury AT ALL COSTS. Imagine if Maupay had gotten injured and ****ed up our season?

• £15 ticket price tells us that the FA Cup isn't going to be a big priority, particularly in earlier stages.

The wage bill last season was only £101,572,000. I for one felt they were worth every penny on Saturday.

I ummed and erred about going to this one, and eventually decided I just couldn't be arsed. Was even offerered a free ticket to the Heineken Lounge the day before the game, which nearly swayed me, but in the end I turned it down. The prospect of seeing a scratch side half-heartedly going through the motions against a nondescript 2nd division team in a half-empty ground just wasn't girding my loins.

In the end I was delighted with my decision, and spent a pleasant afternoon down the local with SSN and a couple of (unsuccessful) betting slips. The fact our game barely got a mention all afternoon told its own tale.

I went, and left disappointed. Was it a shock for me ? not particularly. Did I want us to progress? Yes of course. Do I think GP got it wrong? before the game thought it was a decent line-up. Do I think the players just didn't try? Of course they tried. Were we good enough on the day? No. I don't get why anyone felt "cheated" . The notion that players simply don't care just doesn't make any sense to me. Did they get frustrated? Yes. It was just a horrible display, and the players whose chance it was to impress will have been so disappointed. Some of them arguably playing for their futures.
Did Wednesday perform that much better than us? Not really. A scruffy goal. They barely deserved it, but we deserved it less. A horrible game, won by a scruffy goal.
As for the fans feeling let down - only 66% of the stadium filled.. sums up our attitude to the game let alone the Club's. If we get ourselves safe, playing the way we have been (Cup game aside!) no-one will remember this or care. I am more concerned by the attitude of small sections of our support - booing players when they are being subbed, booing at half-time vs. Sheff United etc.
