Anyone know? I'm guessing about 30 give or take a few.

Google doesn't apear to know the answer. It just gave me a list of who has qualified this year or a list of english champions.

So when google fails it's time to turn to nsc which NEVER fails.

Palace played in the 1998 Intertoto cup. They applied to take part (and were the only
English club to apply that season).

Wimbledon played in the 1995 Intertoto Cup, their group game against Bursaspor was played at the Goldstone.

Palace applied to play in the Intertoto Cup 1998 (they were relegated that year, so didn't exactly qualify).

Winbledon also applied to play in the Intertoto Cup 1995/6 - and played their 'home' games at the Goldstone. They missed out when the won the FA Cup because of the ban.

edit - just beaten to it!

Ah. I don't count the Intertoto. If you apply to play then it's not really Europe IMO.

My next question, not necessarily for you two gents, is can anyone match the competitions to the clubs?

No one counts the Intertoto Cup (apart from Palace fans, who tend to forget they applied to play in it).

I wouldn't include the Intertoto as teams applied to be a part of that. They weren't there on merit.

Sorry, Palace.

Birmingham lost to Roma in in the fairs cup final after crowd trouble caused the match to be called off.
Swindon won the Anglo Italian cup 1970

Bristol rovers , Southend, actually loads of teams played in it.

The Anglo Italian cup sounds nuts. I've just wiki'd it. Swindon beat Napoli, were 3-0 up before the game was called off due to the Napoli fans rioting. It was only created because QPR won the league cup and UEFA wouldn't let third tier teams play in its competitions. Swindon had the same issue two years later so were given a couple of friendlies gainst Roma, the copa italia winners.

It was amateur teams for a decade or so leading to teams like Poole, Sutton utd and Bath either winning it or reaching the final.

Apparently the tournament had a reputation for violence not just between fans but players too.

That all said, I'm not counting it as proper European football as it was only between English and Italian teams.
