We lost the Goldstone through Messrs Archer,Stanley and Bellotti who bought into the club for penny a share a total of just over £65....who then set up a company to sell the ground to for £7m so this other company could resell the the ground with building permission for £24m....giving their company a £17m profit....alledgedly.....but thanks to sharp eyed fans this was found out.....hence all protest...the club owed the revenue quite a sum of money. We sold our assets to pay the revenue and went back to basics. Bellotti arranged for us to play our games at Gillingham. Paul Scally was Bellotti s mate. For two years we were at Gillingham until the chance came to get back into Brighton via an old athletes field used mainly for amatuer and school games. The rest was bought about by the Bloom family who have a long association with the Albion.

What I don't understand is a £8 mill shortfall for this season and next, especially on your turnover ?
I'm sure all will be revealed when the accounts are made public.

I don't understand it either tbh. We certainly pay sensible champion wages too. One thing is for sure, TB knows what he's doing.

Neither do I....something about transport costs and such like. Maybe?

Genuinely interested.

One of you stated it was a £29m academy in another post, and I was lambasted (rather lamely I thought) for going off topic, but I guess the Amex cost way more than that, so both together thats a shitload of cash, and my understanding is that you went bankrupt in 1997 and lost the Goldstone (happy to be corrected here if not so) and then were at the Withdean, which are not the environs of a cash rich club I would say.

So is it a benefactor a la Abramovich, a shedload of debt (this would explain losing £8m a year ??) or something else ?

Not taking the piss at all, just wondered how you did it, because we could certainly do with some of that !!

Cheers

We will be hiring out the facilities if you know of any clubs that want to borrow. We don't have dopey music playing every time a goal is scored though. There was a discussion about getting a cannon to fire blue and white confetti everywhere. That was deemed to be very tacky and never entertained. Any way the only one they could find was clogged up with red and blue, must of been a shit wedding.

Subsidised transport is over a million. It used to be part of the ticket but the first year we were at the Amex, fans were asked to buy vouchers. Many didn't and the club had to make up the shortfall. We have to have subsidised public transport as part of the planning permission.
The club is also having to pay to fund a residents parking scheme for Moulsecoomb and Coldean as selfish drivers are parking in those areas. Our managing director got the sack with immediate effect 13 months ago so there seems to have been a problem with expenditure in our first year of operation at the new stadium but as you say, all will be revealed when the accounts are made public.

That's correct.

And he bankrolled most of the Withdean losses, and current Amex losses by the same loan.

No external interest bearing debt.

Handy. Seems like you have won the equivalent of the football lottery, based on what I read here.

Thanks for the replies, was just reading up on the history as much as I can find, but its all pre-amex - interesting stuff.

Here is a look at the new academy. Quite a few pitches, astro turf etc. Should be good for development and with the new ground, should attract players that want decent facilities... :)

Firm puts bill in, TB writes cheque and gives it to firm.

Easy.

Another genuine question: what was Tony Bloom doing during 'the troubles' of the 1990s?

Was'nt the Zaha fee of £12m ring fenced by anything over £8m was available for players....suggesting that Palace lost £8m

We lost £4 mill last season, but with the sales of players in pre season, that would have almost covered the predicted loss for this season. The Zaha money could cover the losses for the next 2 seasons, but if promotion happens ..... ???

Try and get your hands on a copy of "Build A Bonfire" book it will explain alot about the Archer,Stanley,Belotti period of our history and how the Goldstone was stolen from under our feet, A highly recommended read!
