Lived in a German speaking country for 11 years and just about got it by the time I left. Kids picked it up in about 2 years attending the local school. Best way to start was a card matching game that had a question and answer but pics helped you match them up, used to read each card as it was turned over, also stickit notes on all household items etc in German so ever time you turned on the tv or opened the fridge you got the German word Despite what others say the grammatical is not easy Der, Die, Das best one I ever heard is if its got something poking out of it it's masculine Table (Der Tisch) and if you put things in it then its feminine bowl (die Schale)
