I think the issue here is the underestimation by the government of how bloody thick the nation is. Intelligent people do not need the enforcement to fall in line but bloody hell there's many out there that must be as thick as treacle.
Yeah, that's what happens after years of telling people not to listen to experts.
For months we have heard endlessly from nearly everyone to keep our distance from each other, really not rocket science is it? Yet idiots, blanks, call them what you like, just refuse to do it. It's got nothing to do with telling people not to listen, it's that as time goes on people appear to have lost reason. People want to blame someone, something, anything but themselves for their actions. If questioned it's not their fault, they've got an ...ism or come from a broken home, they're disenfranchised any sodding excuse. It's frightening to hear what some say.
What some dumb arses need is their bestest soap star to say something in a special Eastenders but guess what, they've stopped filming.
What they should do is arrest these idiots go round their homes and take all their food and toilet rolls they undoubtedly been hoarding and give them to the elderly (mind you the crap food they'd have bought most probably be rejected)

The messages from places like Bergamo are very clear. Stay home. The messages from Johnson are still telling people that outdoor activity is fine providing you stay 2 metres apart. Followed by "Stay at home". Really? Which is it? Everybody can see what is needed-people need protecting from themselves. It's that simple. Seemingly we also need protecting from him and his 'team of experts' who are giving out mixed messages. The scenes of people gathering all over the country has proven that Brits are f__King stupid and selfish being led by a ditherer totally out of his depth.

I think he is saying he’d prefer it if you stayed at home but will not be enforcing it yet. If you must go out keep at least two metres from others. Maybe he thinks we are brighter than it seems we are

I am trying not to do that. I can't stand Johnson - he is a liar and a fraud, only interested in himself, and his whole persona is an act. And I think we have a very poor set of politicians at the moment - almost across the board. But I am trying to set that to one side.
I follow politics and current affairs. I take an interest. I get the message. But I also realise there are lots of people who do not watch the press conferences and even if they do can see the mixed messages. I do not think it is clear. Pubs are open - but don't go in them. No large social gatherings - but leave schools open. Lockdown may be coming - but do not hoard. Don't visit on Mother's Day - *wink* I hope to see mine. Advertising works. the message needs to be clear and it needs to be repeated. And I would say the same if (struggling to thing of a politician of stature .....) Dominic Grieve, Yvette Cooper or Jess Philips were PM.
There are unprecendented times and mistakes are going to be made, and we are going to have differences in agreement about timing etc - and the government has lots more information and access to expertise than any of us. But getting a clear, sustained message out is basic for a government. They managed it for Brexit. Why not now ?
Also ask people who think the government are doing a good job with the message - do they have uncritical support ? And is they are doing a good job on the message why are sensible people ignoring it. I can see plenty from my own social groups. And it is not because these people are stupid. It is because they do not yet appreciate the seriousness of it all - and all of our role in it. I think everybody is re-adjusting on a daily basis. And again - I say we need a clear and sustained message.
And I hope Johnson ups his game. Because as as country we need it.

I'll be sleeping in the car from now, as my work is forcing me into the office - with a laughable designation as a "key worker" - and the vulnerable ones I live with are in sensible self total isolation.

There are lots of examples out there now for them to implement effective ways of slowing this menace down.
Bergamo being the obvious one who delayed the implementation of a lock down and are paying a great price.
Taiwan saw the shitstorm on the horizon, prepared themselves and appear to be in control.
The UK is relying on "Please stay at home" messages.

I hope today he can find the balls to ORDER people to stay in unless they have essential business. His dithering is costing lives minute by minute and he should have put measures in place days ago with severe consequences for those ignoring the regulations.

I’m quite shocked that western Countries (with the exception of places like New Zealand & Ireland) have not copied the expertise of these SE Asian countries. South Korea rolled out 25,000 tests per day within weeks of the initial outbreak in China; that is a Country with the correct preparation and planning.
History will judge our government’s response on two key moments.
1. The Super-Spreader arrived back on these shores with those he infected in France. This was contained. No one contracted Covid-19 from that initial introduction to our realm. What were the efforts to stop any other infected people entering the Country afterwards?
2. Italy lost control of the spread of Covid-19 at the beginning of March. What efforts did the government make to stop, screen or quarantine travellers from the fast developing hot-spot of northern Italy (the Spain) given the advantages we have on this Island being not a part of the Schengen open border agreement?
The ‘contain’ phase is still going on in a these SE Asian Countries. They are fighting tooth and nail to track, trace, test and isolate Covid-19. I worry that our strategy assumed the ‘contain’ phase would be a battle not worth fighting, a battle already lost and that the other phases were of more importance.
It’s like the French opening their borders for the Nazis to just roll in unopposed in WW2 whilst they concentrated on organising and arming the French Resistance. They had magnificent neighbours and allies to bail them out, who have we got to save us this time?

McDonald's and I hope KFC closing will at last get the message home that this is serious.
Regarding Plymouth this is a disaster for a great many of Janners, they now have nothing to go out for.
