Always been noogar during my lifetime. A nugget is a small piece of gold.

I am also from your era, and we always asked for nugget.
Changed to nougat by the snobs because nugget sounded too common.
For example we have a village nearby called Boarhunt . Now referred to as Borrunt. Why?

Typical Yanks! A buoy is pronounced "boy" here and throughout the world yet they insist on calling it a "booee". Route as in the famous song "Route 66" according our cousins is now a "rout" . . . . FFS!!

As I rule of thumb, if there's 2 ways of pronouncing a word, listen to how an American pronounces it and assume it's the other one. This works with most words.
