Our 2nd line internal support is in India.

The reality is it is cheaper and does just about the same job.

Until that changes more and more companies will move their services to India as it is a simple way of improving margin.

Margin is what the shareholders look for.

Last year I visited a call centre centre in Bangalore as part of a visit to IISC and the Hindustan Aircraft Company. This centre was in fact 6 tower blocks with gyms, shops, pools, accomodation and its own power station and bus service. Many UK companies have their calls run out of there. It does provide jobs for Indians (about 10000 on this site), and they are reasonably well paid but a major problem seems to be that they all want graduates (numerate and English speaking). Graduates work for them to get into management, but they can't all be managers. Now that education is becoming deregualted in India and more students are paying for it, it is starting to become less attractive than it was for those graduates. Also, the cost of living in Bangalore is rising as fast as the incomes.

I wont use them myself. However, an Indian TV company is now making a soap on life in a call centre. The British don't come off as badly as the Americans apparently. The Irish obviously come off the worse.
