How do they build Piers?

Not Uncle Buck but the things that stick out to sea? Always wondered this, I mean how is it possible to lay all the foundations and that? Proper clever I reckon, specially as it was done ages ago before we was all born.

You lay the foundations by drilling far down into sea bed where it is dry. Then you build much like a bridge.

I had to sit through DAYS of evidence about the safety of Hastings Pier and how engineering could make it safe to carry greater loads through cross-bracing and over-bridging.

It is quite interesting but not after HOURS and HOURS of it.

I just wouldn't know where to start. Fortunately though, I have no plans to try.

On one of those Engineering programs about the Brooklyn Bridge (I think it was that one) - they built chambers which were loweded to the river - bed - then the water was pumped out while they worked.

It was amazing - and to think it was all the century before last.

I think it must be one of the best kept secrets in the construction industry - perhaps you have to master the funny handshake and all that!

As for piers, don't you send down a diving team to dig a hole and fill it with concrete before it fills with water?

Crane towers BUILD THEMSELVES! How clever is that!!

The towers come in sections that are slid up, and then are bolted into place.
