[Albion] How did we get so bad at defending free kicks?

All defending has been shit. It's Potters BIGGEST DOWNFALL. It's what will ultimately send us down

From what I saw on MOTD West Ham’s defending is even more shit, not to mention the Palace keeper’s whoopsie when he dropped the ball over the line, and Watford’s contribution in conceding 3 goals after being 2-0 up.

Enjoy the stirring! :drink:

If only we could improve our defending to about 13th in the PL we would be safe.

Oh, hang on.....

I guess you're going to say it isn't the number of goals that's the problem, but the type of goals. Potter 'goals conceded' have a special toxic power, innit.

It is a problem and easy to blame Webster, as he is simply not up to it at the moment. A liability. Defensively, six goals conceded at Bmuff and WHU is poor, against sides with ( up to then ( poor scoring records ) Others are right, its a combination of lining up too high and reacting too slowly. Its in GP's hands to sort it. We cannot concede this number of goals.

Wouldnt it help if we moved the whole line 2 yds further out giving a bigger gap between keeper and defensive line so that Ryan doesn't have to come for the actual cross but can save it in his goal. This would mean the CB etc winning the headers and that wouldn't be improved by bringing in Burn when fit as he won very few, although 6ft 6in tall. I think it will be helped when Dunk is told to attack every ball to win it and Lamptey pick up the 2nd ball. With Webster and Bernardo also hoin g for the crosses. Their 3rd goal was down to the midfield men not tracking back as GM won the ball but it went straight to Snodgrass just outside of our box where a midfield man should have been marking.

At freekicks we need to defend deeper if anything. We are weak in blocking runs. The first goal showed how easy it is to run through our defence with the marker ending some 5 yards behind the attacker. Most teams would have blocked off the space, we invite it!
