[Albion] How did the goalie not save Mitoma's header ....?

Their keeper was excellent (apart from the obvious). It was just a clever header. Mitoma could not get above the ball to use the pace to head it down, but he was able to take the pace off it and control direction. As someone who has expressed the opinion Mitoma needs to practice his heading - it was a masterclass. The keeper did well. Just beaten by a piece of quality.

Just had a look at the extended highlights and I think the OP is correct about the keeper. It was a great header but the keeper was in no-mans land. Had he stayed on his line he might have saved it. But he was back-peddling. Still, a great goal.

Hey @SeagullinExile i’m sure you’re unaware, but ‘Jap’ is kind of a racial slur, particularly in the US. At the risk of being labelled woke & snowflake etc, etc, I thought it worth bringing up. UTA.
You mean like Brit, Scot, Pole, Yank, Aussie and a lot more that are obviously racist and highly offensive?

Hi Seagullinexile, no that’s incorrect. It’s not my intention to get into an argument about it, I’m merely passing on what I know. I’ll leave it there.
Maybe sometimes you should think about the things you don’t know?

Because if you knew me, and more to the point my partner, then you’d realize that your insinuation has made you look somewhat foolish.

He hasn't insinuated anything. It is a statement of fact that some people find that term offensive.

Thank you for pointing it out @willalbion

Dude, let’s be clear, I’m not suggesting for a second that you’re racist, or that your post was in any way racist. I’m insinuating nothing. My point was simply the word ‘Jap’ is generally considered to be a racial slur. That’s it. Apologies if I’ve offended you in anyway. Not my intention.

A Japanese friend of mine back in secondary school hated the term, not because it’s generally offensive in itself but because of the connotations in brings up with some people.

No harm was intended by the use of it in this instance but I think will meant well in making you aware, as I myself wasn’t aware it was something that was offensive until that friendship.

Let’s get the thread back on track…

Mitoma is f**king unreal, even in a game where he wasn’t massively involved he made a lot of the limited times he was.

There is a good consensus on here about why he didn't save it......taken by surprise, weight on wrong foot, quite a way off his line.

If you pause this video at about 40 seconds in, you can see that he actually did get his hand to the ball before it crossed the line.

With a much larger space to aim for on the right hand side of goal , I expect the goalkeeper expected the header to go to his right . The fact it went to the left in a much smaller space I think surprised him and he couldn’t quite react quite enough . Thankfully !
You must have been watching in a mirror. Read this and you will see you've got it all cockeyed.

You didn't include the Pakistan equivalent in your list.

EDIT: To clarify, just highlighting how not all of them are completely innocent, not intending to imply anything insidious on anyone's part.

Quite. General rule of thumb on these things: would people from the country in question routinely use the term when referring to themselves? Or is the term only used by others to refer to them? If it's the latter, then there's a good chance (not guaranteed) it might be found offensive by the people being referred to.

From the examples listed, "Aussie" is a term proudly and loudly used by Aussies to refer to themselves. "Yank" ... not so sure, definitely not in the way that an Aussie would use the term (rather definitely derogatory the majority of the time, although often with tongue firmly planted in cheek). I certainly wouldn't use the short form to refer to a Japanese person or persons. Too much loaded history in the term.
