I've just had the house extended, repainted, and refurbished, and now want to get an alarm system. I have had a few firms around, they all make outrageous claims, and all recommend different types of system.

All I want is something that is unobtrusive, won't involve replastering the walls again, ideally won't be set off by the dog and rings a bell when someone tries to break in. Quotes of up to £2k seem a little eye watering to me, any advice gratefully sought.

Cheers

Just have to spend a little less time bowling an excessive number of overs KIERAN and a little more time prostituting yourself in TV studios, letching at interviewers' norks, to pay for it.

Bollocks to that. ADT will come out and fit for free (or £100) if you ask them what deals they are doing, and they charge £25 a month for monitored access.

We have ADT, they did the lot for free altohugh I did pay £80 for monitored smoke alarms and as mentioned above £25 a month and they will come out once every 6 months to service and check the whole system as well included in the price.

Only some alarm systems (the more expensive!) will qualify for a discount on your home insurance premium. Worth checking before you commit:thumbsup:

I've got an alarm system which I never, ever switch on.

Save yourself the money, and just get a dummy box on the front and back wall of the house. That's all you need.

Make them put that bit in writing is my advice. We had a very similar problem when they promised us the earth and then started drapping wires all over the place. It was only by showing the fitter the written confirmation of this that he reluctantly started doing it properly and I reckon they lost money on the fitting as it ended up taking 3 days rather than the alloted one day.
