Das Reich, I deal with an IFA who's sorted out every mortgage I've had, and all my family's mortgages for some years, to whom none of us have ever paid a penny. She gets her commission (which she publishes with the mortgage offer document) from the lender, not from me. She's always been up front and honest, and has saved me a lot of time and money in the past. If you're dealing with the right people you can avoid the crooks, I think.
same here Herne Hill, but there's always a few :bigwave:

It could be arugued that if the lenders weren't paying out all this commission they could pass the savings on to the borrowers.

You try arguing that with the lender old boy - see if they'll send you a cheque for £600 or reduce your mortgage accordingly, for arranging it with them. If you're the borrower, you get charged a mortgage arrangement fee from some lenders. That's one benefit of an honest IFA - I don't care if they pay her £6000 frankly, she saves me money and I'd certainly never see that from the lender 'coz I ain't an accredited IFA.

I did my own research, which took a few hours on the net (for my first mortgage), to make a list of what I thought were the best deals.

It came as no suprise that the broker I went to advised me to go for the deal that was at the top of my list. He pocketed himself £600. Nice work if you can get it!

An incredibly simplistic and naive view point. Arranging a mortgage is not just a case of filing in a form and putting your feet up. The 2 hours or so to do that is ths start of a process which is very time consuming and complicated which normally takes 2-3 months to complete. Also the advisor would have had to pass professional qualifications and is regulated to the pips squeek. The previous company worked out it costs around £ 450 to process a mortgage with time involved, admin staff, postage, phone calls thats before the advisor is paid anything so the admin would get a share of £ 150, not too much for 2 months work when Ashley Cole is hard done by as he only got offered £ 60000 a week from Arsenal.

Also by getting business from brokers they do not have to pay for branch networks, advertising and staff costs so there would be no saving made.

My mortgage broker recently offered to throw in a dog operated cooling fan to close the deal.

Naturally I signed on the dotted line and now my dog is too busy ensuring even oscillation of cool air around the bedroom to even THINK about going outside.

Just getting back to the weather theme, why is it that in Summer people can't sleep with a night time temp of 15C yet in winter they will turn the thermostat up to 20C?

Try taking Nytol (the pharmaceutical one not the herbal one).

Tried it recently when turning round quickly from night shifts to early ones, and it works a treat

It is too hot at Night and I am woken up at 5.30am by my Dogs as they are over heated and want to go outside EVERY DAY.

I am not sleeping well and I am tired and have a long days work ahead and am not happy at all.

I blame Wilkins.

That is all

Have a read of the Desert Orchid / Dog food thread on NSC Gold - then your be able to laugh yourself to sleep.
