Horror foul in Austrian League

This appalling foul happened at LASK Linz v Salzburg match yesterday. Not for the faint-hearted.

The Linz striker only got a yellow card and cannot be suspended because the referee has already dealt with the incident.

Salzburg keeper has a double leg fracture and will be lucky to ever play again.

I seem to remember cases in France where players have been suspended for several months - surely UEFA should allow national associations to suspend players whether the ref has seen the seriousness of the incident or not.

Right here, right now
Shocking, should suffer a long ban for that. What was the ref thinking only giving a yellow?

When Middlesbrough first signed Emannuel Pogatetz he was suspended for a few months for breaking someone's leg in a match in whatever country he'd been signed from. They are stricter on horror fouls in Europe, and that is an absolute shocker.

In fairness to the forward, it seems to me like he's looking away when he puts the foot out so maybe it was more reckless than violence with intent.

There certainly seems to be something wrong with the game, though, when a Salzburg gets the same punishment as the perpetrator for squaring up to Kragl!

Think the ref will get a suspension even if the player doesn't...

I would say that is reckless as opposed to being intentional. Awful nonetheless.

I just watched it again, and I can't agree. There is no challenge until he spots the keeper coming out, and then all of a sudden he flings out a leg. To me, that's both reckless and intentional. He doesn't intend to break the leg, I'm sure of that, but it's a shocking tackle and a truly horrible incident.

I think Patrick Barcley summed it up rather well for me with the metaphor that 'the drunk driver does not get into the car with the intent to kill'. That is a truly horrendous tackle.

Agree! And that is one nasty foul....love the morbid multi-repeat coverage by the Austrians!

Ban him for the duration of the goalie's rehab' at least! Even if reckless rather than intentional (I'm doubtful is only reckless) he should suffer the same period of football inactivity as wasn't a complete accident either way.

Reckless, poor technique, and cynical. Don't think he said "Shit. lsot the ball, lets break his leg" but he definatly meant to go in hard, and thats more cynical than out and out intentional.

This kinda thing makes mme wondwer why i play football.
