Honeymoon destination

How did you go about that? We're looking at the US for this summer and that sounds like the sort of thing, though I'd rather do LA than San Francisco. (Fly-drive is no good as neither of us drive.)

Having lived in both cities, I'd recommend SF over LA by some way, for a honeymoon. Sausalito in Marin County is just on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, or there's Tiburon just a short way up the bay.
A drive up to Portland or Seattle would be brilliant, but at least to Eureka along Highway 1.

If you feel very much for the LA area, stay further south in either Newport Beach or Laguna Beach - then you can drive the 50-odd miles up to visit Los Angeles for a day or two, but be in a nice area to stay in. La Jolla is also cool to visit, maybe stay for a day or two. See if you can book accommodation in advance though, because that bit can get rather expensive if gettting motels/hotels on the fly.

We went to SF (Don't bother with LA) and then went by Train to Yosemite, we spent two days/nights there (nowhere near enough) (Last hour or so was on a coach.)

Yosemite ias AWESOME!

You could then return to SF , get an internal flight to Las Vegas and home.

If you do go to SF, make sure you go the Alcatraz tour first thing in the morning, before it's too busy. We were on the first ferry of the day, and walked around the place virtually on our own.

All of the above can be booked on the net.

Enjoy

I find that half of the fun is doing and arranging it yourself. Flight to LA + hotel then Greyhound Bus or train or even fly to Vegas + hotel, fly home from Vegas or via LA. If you have the time to scan the net it is great fun to book it all yourself and usually a lot cheaper. We always do this when we go on holiday. Flight, then car then hotel if you dont drive public transport in USA is good and cheap.

I always try to book everything separately. Like you say, it's fun and often works out much cheaper.

The problem with this trip is single flights from London to San Fran and then from LA home are double normal return flights. What's that all about?

The posh bit
we did:

3 days hong kong

10 days in bali ( 3 in ubud in centre of island then the beach for 7 days)

then stopped in bangkok for 3 on way home.

city, rain forest, beach, and city.

think that ticks most boxes.

bali is beautiful and the service is second to none, very attentive especially on honeymoon.

bangkok is mad but stay 5 star for luxury.

you could do this for about 3K

USA is shite

also borneo is awesome. but will need stop overs - cities - as it is a long way 17 hours direct, but with stop overs very easy to do.

meet forest beach superb diving (sipidan) unusual animals and turtles.

That won't be the case at all, although I could imagine someone could see it as that if they used regular web-based flight search engines. Speak to a specialist such as Trailfinders as, in most cases, those flights are likely to be pretty close, pricewise, as a straight return into either city.

Another suggestion into the mix: Cuba. Plenty of decent beach spots, including Varadero, and then do 4 or 5 nights in Havana, which is a truly stunning city. Get there before the yanks do.

Borneo is great - I did this in the year we got married, although not as a honeymoon (I spent 3 weeks in Zanzibar for that) - spend a few days in Kuala Lumpur, which is great fun, and then hop on a plane over to Malaysian Borneo and enjoy the beach.

NMH neither of them drive so what good is that to them?

I was answering on behalf of the thread starter actually, who I'm assuming might possibly be able to drive.
Anyway, even in the USofA there is such thing as public transport.

When I lived in San Francisco I didn't have a car or motorbike, but managed a few trips - including a brilliant time at a massive festival in San Bernardino - from which afterwards, me and the German lass with me at the time hitch hiked down to Newport, stayed on a 52foot luxury yacht in the marina, then hiked the Pacific Coast Highway all the way back north - most of the way sitting in open-back pick-up trucks. One was a farmer-type truck belonging to a hippy couple, they put us up in San Louis Obispo after we got their ride from Santa Barbara.
It was ace, and I wouldn't have traded that experience for anything.

Tahiti is nice, but there would be a lot of beach time, unless the hill climbing or jungle exploring, market shopping or fishing counts as distracting enough.
If I were honeymooning I think I'd head for Fiji and rent a hut on Treasure Island for a few days, then take a flight to New Zealand.

Good stuff, cheers.

...or maybe try the airline sites directly. Virgin allow you to price up in and out of different cities here:

Virgin Atlantic Airways - Popup

Check some of the US carriers - US Airways, United, American, Delta, NWA etc and they'll probably have something similar. In most cases the flights may be indirect, unlike Virgin, but you'd expect to pay less for the 'inconvenience'.

Well we flew in a aeroplane to San Francisco from Heathrow about 11 hours then stayed at Fishermans Wharf then after a week of Trams, Baseball Alcatraz and shit we flew (again in an aeroplane although a smaller one) to Las Vegas and stayed in the Luxor which had an inclinator I gambled a lot probably too much won quite a bit first few days lost it all and some by end of week, she sunbathed a lot we did all the things honeymooners do and we went to the Grand Canyon in a chopper. We then flew back to LA to get a connecting flight to Heathrow got a cab home then two days later I went back to work and just about avoided being blown up.......July 2005.

Not a usual suggestion, but I went to Costa Rica last year on my honeymoon - spending a couple of days in New York on the way back.

I stayed here:

Dubai then as some beaches are women only days, some are men only days and some are both sexes days

There is the beach, the amazing new buildings, the desert, cheap brilliant food, and a massive indoor skiing centre attached to the worlds biggest shopping mall

Anywhere but Dubai

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned the correct answer, yet.

Barbados.

Great beach, food, weather, attractions, but the winner is the people, they were fantastic.
Telling a colleague about it, he returned saying 'I thought you'd laid the friendliness on a bit thick, until I got there. Turns out you didn't do it justice'.

Top top place, you won't be disappointed.
