Want some beach time but don't want to spend the entire holiday on it

Any suggestions gratefully received

Dubai then as some beaches are women only days, some are men only days and some are both sexes days

There is the beach, the amazing new buildings, the desert, cheap brilliant food, and a massive indoor skiing centre attached to the worlds biggest shopping mall

What he said, i have been twice. Loads to do & see, would recommend doing the dune bashing which finishes of with a meal at the Bedwin camp. Top day out

How did you go about that? We're looking at the US for this summer and that sounds like the sort of thing, though I'd rather do LA than San Francisco. (Fly-drive is no good as neither of us drive.)

This is not entirely relevant to the question, but I would recommend going to Yosemite National Park, spend some time browsing along the docks and DEFINITely do the Alcatraz tour.

I find that half of the fun is doing and arranging it yourself. Flight to LA + hotel then Greyhound Bus or train or even fly to Vegas + hotel, fly home from Vegas or via LA. If you have the time to scan the net it is great fun to book it all yourself and usually a lot cheaper. We always do this when we go on holiday. Flight, then car then hotel if you dont drive public transport in USA is good and cheap.

I'd echo that. I'm off to Yosemite in the autumn, renting a house in a little-known village right inside the park, with views of Half Dome and El Capitan.

This will be the view from my lounge:

We're also going to do a week in San Diego, which looks like it has loads to do, including the swimming with dolphins thing. Book a dip with Flipper to really earn some Brownie points with your new missus.
