Just for perspective, my black gay friends really do find it funny, they actually said 10 years ago that Brighton fans need to man up.

I now await the offended telling me that I am a liar.

My Indian friend at school wasn’t offended by the p*** shop slur, yes he was Indian but he still got it, doesn’t mean many others wouldn’t be upset.

A bunch of Leeds fans, after the game, calling every Brighton fan they passed - including my teenage son - "Gay ****s".

West Yorkshire's finest old bill lining that road didn't give a shit despite plenty of people pointing it out to them. One copper in particular got quite arsey "I've told you three times (why we're not doing anything)" with one of ours.

Was the reason they weren’t doing anything about it “we’re the police, we wouldn’t have joined if we gave a shit about minorities”?

Geez, what the actual fxxk are you on about? At no point did I say it was the end of the argument. People are having a discussion, but one side feels it has the right to be the only opinion worthy of attention.

As you well know, Australia has been a little slow in clamping down on homophobia and the like. In my own workplace I am the guy politely pulling up others when the humour goes a bit too far. But people on this thread are offended by ‘we can see you holding hands’ FFS.

Why does that mean you're a liar? And why does an example for some gay people not being offended suddenly mean that no one else will be?

I often feel that the people most affected are young away fans who possibly haven't come to terms with their sexuality, and there they are with their 'mates' who are being homophobic. I imagine they'd feel quite uncomfortable and it would make coming out even more difficult.

It's all well and good for a confident gay person to laugh it off, but others will be affected. I've no doubt that you can find examples of people who aren't bothered by people shouting 'town full of p*****', but that doesn't make it ok.

I think that’s kind of the point isn’t it, it’s a lazy stereotype about Brighton as a place, that targets a minority who are targeted every day simply for their sexuality.

Whilst I’m not offended by it because I’m not gay, if I was at some point in my life targeted for my sexuality I can’t honestly sit here and say I know for sure I wouldn’t feel upset about a group of thousands of fans loudly chanting things like ‘going down on your boyfriend’ etc

I’m the least offended person in the world normally but it doesn’t take much to see how these chants might cause upset.

What I cannot live with is the sanctimonious opinions of those who follow what they perceive as the moral high ground. In the past I have had comments on here that I am liar about my gay friends, some still go down the route of ‘the gammon with the fictitious black, gay friends’. Well fxxk ‘em, I know the truth, not some bollocks ‘my truth’. Yes, homophobia still needs to be addressed, but ‘holding hands’ is well down the list of concern.

And to be honest, if you take every offensive possibility out of football chants, then you may as well turn the franchises over to Disneyland and sit at home in your little microcosm in front of your TV.

I have no reason to doubt what you say.

My opinion is that there is no place for homophobia in football (or society for that matter) in 2023, just like racism absolutely none. I don't know if you think I am sanctimoniously following the high ground but that is your choice.

Football crowds are best when they combine wit and a little humility. Not something I really associate with Leeds fans but my experiences, biases and generalisations are fairly out of date these days.

A beer would be good. I will give you a shout next time I am in Melbourne.

I’m sure no Brighton fan is offended personally by the same tired homophobic chants we’ve heard every week for decades.

The real victims of these chants* are the LGBTQ+ Leeds fans sat in a crowd of their fellow fans who are openly mocking their sexuality. Unfortunately these knuckle dragging morons doing the chanting are too thick to realise the only people they’re upsetting are their own fans.

There will have been people who have been to a game against us and left feeling like they aren’t welcome in their own teams ground because of the abuse they’ve heard aimed at us, that’s wrong and it is 100% something that should be taken seriously.

Edit: *Obviously it’s not just the chanting that will have this effect. It includes the random abuse shouted outside, the limp wrist hand gestures and the complete lack of interest from the police.

Does everyone in the Leeds crowd genuinely HATE gay people? Probably not, however it does say a lot when you’re only retort to a chant is to resort to a stereotype.

I think a lot of Leeds fans are just genuinely thick, it’s not that they hate gay people they just simply don’t understand why these ‘light hearted ‘joke’ chants aren’t really a joke anymore.

I’m not offended or outraged, but I could see why a gay person in our crowd yesterday might have been.

Brighton fans did exactly that.
