I think we are missing the point here.

Why the hell do you want a double bed with a single bed above it?

Either;

1) This bed is never going to see any action

2) You like your kid close by when you're shagging

3) You're into some seriously kinky stuff involving complicated bedding and possible a swing.

Think you will find that the bottom part turns in to a sofa. The idea being you use it when you have a friend over to stay.
