It depends what you want, Without judgement if you want partys, Islands, Buckets british girls, Wifi, burgers, bbq's etc etc then stay south go to Ko Phi Phi (pretty island no cars allowed fully of tourists though), Phuket, Ko Samui, Ko Pha Nang(Home of the --NOW CHARGING ENTRY-- full moon party

The downsides of such a trip is the high prices, the high likely hood of getting scammed, Northerners, Chavs, Sky Sports, Everyone wearing Chang/Singa beer shirts, Rude Thai people in general (due to being spoken to like slaves all day by the Beckford family from Newcastle etc)

I went about the same time as you last year, For a just over 3 weeks and I spent half down south half up north, South was fun and certainly due a visit (just dont think it is the be all and end all of Thailand) then head up north, visit the northern cities and old buddest towns with gaint gold Buddha watching over the town and little temple villages, Drive into the mountain for three hours and just when you think you can drive no more you come across this amazing little backpacker town, Very few visit but it has the best atmosphere ever very famous place for Thais to go on holiday too. Climbing though forests in these hills and coming across little water falls. Words cannot do it justice!

It is a country of two halves, Visit them both and you will love it.

P.S If you do visit Ko Phi Phi try and find a little cocktail bar called Sharkys oppo the dive centre the landlady is a lovely woman, Lived in Kent for years so a great person to chat to about the two cultures and a very funny lady.

To be fair thats exactly what I want to do, mix it up a bit with a bit of both!! have heard all about the south and within reason thats not such a bad thing but only for a short time... But would definately want to see the sights and temples etc, what you did sounds about right to me.

I went the Easter before last, also on my own. Had a whale of a time. You'll propbably want more than 2 days in Bangkok, but not more than a week.

Things you must see:
Grand Palace
Sleeping Buddha
Floating Market
You should go for an elephant ride
The "adult entertainment" has to be seen. In Bangkok thats Nana Plaza (a three story building a bit like a shopping mall except that it's all strip joints - and a "short stay hotel" and Soi Cowboy mainly. Do some research first, there's plenty of websites available to find the bars that do and don't suit you.
Dusit Zoo in Bangkok has an awesome white tiger, it's also right next door to the Parliament building, the Throne Hall and the King's residence.

Warnings and advice:
Don't accept the advice of a taxi driver or tuk tuk driver as to where to go, they'll just take you to places they get paid to, mainly scam tailors, jewellers and massages. The skytrain and metro systems are easy to use and incredibly cheap. They're also much much cleaner and reliable than most oin Europe. Sitting on the skytrain it's hard to believe you're in a relatively poor country - everywhere else, it's easy. Some seats are reserved for monks, you can sit in them but must give them up if a monk gets on. If the platform is busy it's polite to queue in the marked area on the platform. It's also Thai custom to give up your seat for anyone less able to stand than you, ragardless of age etc. It's quite common for adult Thais to give up their seat for a schoolkid carrying loads of books for example.
Taxis are also cheap as long as you make them use the meter. If they refuse to use the meter or try to take you somewhere you haven't asked to go, get out. One night I had all the taxis outside Soi Cowboy quoting me different prices to get back to my hotel, I said I'd get in the first taxi to use the meter, a young lad said he'd take me on the meter and did. It was around a tenth of the lowest quoted price! (So I gave him a hefty tip)
Tuk-tuks don't have meters, agree a price before you get in or they WILL rip you off.
Motorbike taxis are the cheapest but most dangerous way to get around. I was in Bangkok for 1 week and saw 2 of them crash.
Thais are genuinely friendly people but there are a LOT of scammers. Be on your guard.
Avoid political protests, they can turn nasty quickly, having said that, I was there during the redshirt protests and both protesters and police were friendly towards me. One group of redshirts even agreed to drive round the block again in their truck waving their flags so I could get a decent picture!

The number one piece of advice, do NOT ever get into a fight with a Thai. Most of them have studied martial arts, you WILL lose, and if you look like winning, other Thai's WILL join in against you and they're not shy about using weapons. If you get in a fight with a Thai it is very likely you will get seriously hurt.

You WILL get the shits at some time, but Thai food is fairly safe, don't drink the tapwater and avoid ice in drinks. Buying young cocoanuts from street stalls, however, is safe and amazingly refreshing. They just chop off the top, stick in a straw and charge you hardly any money.

Clothes stalls on the street (especially on Sukhumvit Road) are not as cheap as they used to be, but VERY cheap compared to the UK (I paid about £3 per Tshirt, £4 for decent shorts). The quality is good as well. All of the T shirts I bought a year and half ago are still in good condition, good shape and haven't shrunk despite being washed several times. It's not suprising, many of the "fakes" on these stalls are made in exactly the same factories as the genuine ones, some of them are genuine ones nicked from the factories.
