Turkey beats Cyprus hands down for sceenery,History,sight seeing,value for money.Not to mention the Turks are far more nicer.Don't give me that bollocks about not having a clue.The only thing Cyprus wins on is the clubbing sceen.I went To Cyprus first and then Turkey a couple of years later.Been back to Turkey four times.I bet you don't get an 8 hour boat trip around Islands with food on board,picked up from hotel and dropped off for £6? Sorry no competition.If i was going to back to Cyprus i would try Paphos.I won't list the sights to see as we will be here all night.

I too find the Turkish, nicer (a bit) which is why I holiday in the TRNC regularly. You stated that the scenery is poor in CY, so I am suggesting you haven't seen all CY has to offer. Clubbing for me is by far and away the worst thing about the place, whereas you think it was the best. I merely pointed out there is more to the place than shagging strangers on the beach, clubbing, and looking at a ghost town. When did you last go on a boat trip in CY? Mine was last September and I loved it.

No i didn't but it's certainly up there with the best.I went clubbing just once as it's not really my thing.How much did you pay for your boat trip or what would the average punter expect to pay? How long was your trip?

I was in Protaras last summer, nice place although it is very touristy with a street full of theme bars and english type pubs. There's plenty of entertainment in the evening (usual mix of hypnotists, comedians and karaoke) so it should probably keep the kids happy, and if they're old enough ayia nappa is only a 10 minute cab ride away. Ayia nappa isn't as big a shithole as you'd think as long as you stay out the square, there's some nice fish restaurants in the harbour.

As has been said, if you want some culture it is there, but you will have to make an effort to go and see it, it all depends on what your idea of a holiday is.

Although I haven't been there, from what my freind said Paphos on the other side of the island is quite similar.

That's not the one easy is talking about, flintstones is in the middle of Ayia Napa. The egyption bar is called the Sfinx (I remember because they spelt Sphinx wrong )

The French spell France wrong also. They refer to it as F-R-A-N-C-A-I-S, when the correct spelling is obviously S-C-U-M.

There are those that think Toremolinos and Marbella are representative of the wonder of Spain. Some think Calais and Paris tells you all you need to know about France. Others think Scotland is cold and uninviting. Some think Germany is full of Nazis. Some think there is nothing more to Cyprus than Pafos and Protaras. But some of those of us who like to travel find out a little more about where they are going, and get a lot from their visits. A boat trip here, a donkey ride there, a night in a tent in the desert, or sleeping under the stars on top of a mountain, all have their merits, and all should be tried if you fancy it. Some places are cheap, really cheap, some places are getting more expensive, and some always were. But there is no need for condemning a place when you haven't seen it all, and base your response to a reasonable question on enjoying on a fumble on the beach in one place and a boat trip round the islands in another. I am sure all destinations have their good points. Some people come to a forum to ask for guidance, suggestions and advice, some respond with helpful answers, others seem to relish in being argumentative, rude and negative. In this instance, CY is a huge holiday destination, enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of Brits every year, so I imagine there will always be some who don’t like it, Auditor, if you take any advice from NSC, I hope you take mine, but then again, Turkey is nice too.

They do that a lot, a throwback from before the island was made independant and dual religion. I think it is something like pre the 60s, the Greek establishment had their own spellings, Pafos, Lefkosia, Larnaka, Amachostos, Lemesos. After the British gave them self rule, in coalition with the Turkish population places were renamed Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, Famagusta. The after the war in '74 the Greek Cypriots responed by gradually renaming places as they were way back during greek only rule. In the North they have all but dropped the Dual names and now use only the Turkish names. Kyrenia is Girne, Famagusta is Gasimagusa, and so on. Sad state of affairs, I don't think the island can ever become one country again, due to politicians. Even though the vast majority of people I meet there, north and south, want it to be one again.

I found Crete to be more 'real' med, then anywhere else.

very friendly people, a relaxed 'manana' (Greek equivalent?) attitude, great food, and damn hot.

relatively cheap bus service too, ivo distances covered (one trip cost only a couple of quid, for a two hour drive between towns)

beat THAT, Brighton & Hove Buses!

I dont agree with that as I think that most of the older people from the south really detest the north perhaps not so much the younger ones I dont know. Wife and I was going to buy a bar there in 1995 but we had problems like me having cancer so it fell through but not before we had become very friendly with a cypriot family in Limmasol. We had to have a 51% Greek shareholder in any new business and the owner of Big Bens on Limmasol seafront in Enarios Complex at the bottom of 28th Octobre St was to be here. I once wanted to go to North Cyprus to see it and asked him how I did it as an English tourist. The answer he gave me was 'go how you like but dont come back here, if that is your wish' and I am sure that he was serious.

We considered buying an appartment again in 2000 which was CY£14k we hummed and farted about with the idea and decided against it. When we was last over ther 2 years ago the same block was selling at EU48k. No good crying over spilt milk.

It has got very expensive to live over there now for the expats and a lot are returning home as their pension doesnt go far enough especially with the EU against £stirling.

But as a 2 times a year visitor, with family and friends living there, I only moslty hear people wanting it to unify, in both the north and south. The referendum they had a couple of years back was a close call, but with a low turn out, and a lot of very expensive propoganda from the antis in the south. Take a look at the queues of Cypriots cars at the border crossings, as well as the tourists, there are many new friendships made now, and old freindships reaquainted, and peope are even working on one side and living on the other. Hope it is only a matter of time until an agreement is reached.

Then again, Turkey is probably nice too.

I stand corrected, the referendum had a reasonable turnout, my mistake. The then president of CY was vocally against the proposal laid down by Kofi Annan and therefore the public followed his campaign, even though a major political party in the south was agaisnt it, which thankfully means there was no whitewash, leaving the door open for further negotiations.

I stand corrected Superphil I can only speak of the limited numbers obviously families of those that were involved in the War. Until we retired in the pubs we used to go to Cyprus for our holidays 3 or 4 times a year and in fact after my cancer op we drove their via Italy and Greece and spent 4 months there whilst deciding if we still wanted to buy a bar. We came home after what was a fabulous time but changing family circumstances dictated that we should not continue with our idea of a bar there and as a result of them being accepted into the EU it has made it too expensive to buy property over there in comparison, and even raised the costs of holidays. The result is that we have now tended to go to Algarve in recent years but even the EU to £ has made that much more expensive when we we were there last week.

Personally I prefered Skiathios (sp) to Cyprus. A bit more laid back and relaxed with all the entertainment (clubs bars etc) a short bus/taxi ride away in the main town centre.

Saying that I would agree with Algie that if i was to go anywhere in the med again it would be Turkey. Been there 13 times now and never had a bad holiday. The locals cant do enough to please, food drinks etc are all reasnable and the landscape is beautiful.

I went to Paphos about 3 years ago to the Elysium Hotel.
Was very nice, friendly staff, amazing food, good historical places to visit if you hire a car and tennis courts too.

cyprus is ok if you get away from the beaten tourist track. we have been a few times and stay here

the family that own that hotel own two others as well. very highly recommended.
