I know I have put couple threads up before for other places, but looks like this place might be the one.

Anyone been? How is the English out there? What other places are good to visit?

Cheers

Long time since I've been there (pre-war, when it was still part of Yugoslavia), so it's a distant memory. BUT, I remember it being gorgeous.

Think there's a lot of bomb damage (one of my colleagues went there a week or so ago and he said it was very eery walking past bomb-damaged buildings, surrounded by beautiful architecture).

I'd definitely consider it myself. It's a beautiful country.

Yes, I went a few years ago. Really enjoyed it. Most people working in restaurants/bars/hotels etc in Dubrovnik speak English. Not much a beach there so if lounging on the beach is your idea of a good time then you are probably better off looking elsewhere.

When you say what other places are good to visit do you mean as a day trip from Dubrovnik, or in Croatia as an alternative to Dubrovnik, or just generally in the world as a whole (ok I guess you didn't mean the last one)?

I remember sitting a few miles off the coast on my ship during the Yugoslav war, watching through binoculars as the starshells come over the mountains from the Serbian artillery positions, closely followed by tons of high explosive battering the place. Very sad watching the place get ripped apart.

went there last year and will be stopping off for a day again this year.

main thing I remember is the heat and millions of people visiting!

Have a walk around the city walls, its very impressive although in the heat it was actually quite dangerous.

Its a bit like going around a museum, but I understand there are some really nice places up in the hills.

I meant like any day excursions to other places nearby...

I have seen you can take boat trips to several islands which seems quite good, and some festival on in August

You can visit Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia on day trips by coach.

Many islands to visit, depending if you want a sandy beach, or a nature reserve, or a nudist beach. Whatever floats your boat.

The only thing you must do is walk along the city walls, there's also a museum bit near the quay / Arsenal bar which might be good if you have any interest about the local history.

We took a trip to Cavtat (pronounced savtat) from the old harbour which was really pleasant. We also went to the island overlooking Dubrovnik who's name escapes me, and that was quite fun to explore, although in truth there wasn't a whole lot to do there. Also took a night cruise in a glass bottomed boat which was a waste of time IMO.

We also went on a couple of excursions to other islands which felt a bit rushed and cramped, Mijet by hydrofoil, where Tito had a Summer house, and the 3 island cruise I think it was called.

If you can find it there is a gap in the walls leading to a nice bar overlooking the sea.

We stayed in the Grand Hotel Argentina, next to the Excelsior and that was only a two or three minute walk to the old town so I'd definitely consider staying there. We couldn't afford the Pucic Palace which was the only hotel within the walls at that time.
