I know Monty has lost his way but remember how good he was when he first came in to the England side. It may be he only needs a move to reignite his career. He is also unlikely to be part of the England one day team too so we will get him for a fair amount of the summer even if he does get a test recall in the future.

I'm no Panesar fan and I think signing him would be a step back BUT the drift he generates is SECOND TO NONE in the world.

Nothing that new, but this is from the Guardian

Sussex are on the verge of pulling off one of the biggest signings of the close season, in Monty Panesar – but they are bracing themselves for disappointment in the case of Matthew Hoggard.

Panesar's move from Northamptonshire looks inevitable after a dismal summer in which he lost his England Test place and, just as crucially, his England contract, which has left Northants desperate to get him off their wage bill.

Panesar's relationship with Northants was also revealed to be rocky when several of the county's South African players were overheard deriding his ability in Afrikaans during a game.

Hoggard is today meeting Leicestershire's coach, Tim Boon, with the prospect that he will be tempted by the offer of a captaincy role that he raised with Yorkshire, but which the county never seriously considered even though Anthony McGrath's captaincy term will formally come to an end next month.

Sussex have had several discussions with Hoggard since he was released by Yorkshire in testy circumstances, but captaincy has not been on the agenda.

Hoggard's high salary demands have caused other potential suitors, such as Essex, Kent and Middlesex, to abandon their interest.

Panesar has a year left on his contract, but he will be allowed to leave Northants by mutual consent. He took only 18 championship wickets for Northants last season at a cost of nearly 60 runs each and was dropped for the final four-day game of the season. His form in one-day cricket was even worse.

Sussex qualified as one of England's two representatives in the inaugural Champions League last month – a world Twenty20 tournament – but they were relegated in the championship and both Panesar and Hoggard would strengthen them in the four-day game.

Sussex's chief executive, Dave Brooks, said: "When there are players of Monty's proven ability available I would expect our coach Mark Robinson to be banging on my door to see what chances there are of us signing them."

Panesar is trying to rebuild his reputation in South Africa – not for England, but in a spell with Highveld Lions in Johannesburg

In the cycle of cricketing fortune I fear we are on the swing back to a happy go lucky team who will tread the depths of the 4-day game whilst having an odd foray in a limited overs competition. Uday Joshi anyone..what about John Spencer and the brothers Buss.

Spud wasn't a bad backup seamer and the Buss brothers were pretty good players - I'm sure that Tony is still the last English-qualified bowler to get 100 wickets in a season for us and Mike got onto the fringes of England selection a couple of times.

It was Joshi who was the disappointment, not terrible but I believe we turned down Barry Richards to sign him - we certainly had one of the weakest overseas players on the circuit.

Ok perhaps it was unfair for me to have picked on those names. They were the first that sprang to mind. But in essence do you disagree with my view?

My recollection as that we would not pay Richards what he wanted and I 'think' we may done something similar for Sir Vivian.

I don't know how player transfers works in cricket - there never seems to be any hostile bids for players - but I'd rather we could poach someone like Boyd Rankin than plump for Monty or Hoggy.
For the money we'd have to pay them, why not entice a decent young (ok, so Monty's not old) player of the ilk we need - i.e. a pacy strike bowler.
James Harris (Glamorgan) is a very bright prospect too.

No, I agree with the sentiments but Spencer and the Busses were three of our better players from that era. Tony Buss played little in his last few seasons and we had a seam attack of John Denman, Spud Spencer, Paul Phillipson, Roger Marshall and, briefly, Alan Wadey when Snow and Greig were playing for England. To put it bluntly, that was not a fearsome attack.

The batting was pretty weak too: Jerry Morley, Peter Graves, Mike Griffith, Jerry Groome were not going to put the fear of God into anyone.

And yes, I'm sure we could have had Barry Richards. I'm not sure about Sir Viv though, I thought we was destined for Somerset but I think there was some other big name we could have got: Andy Roberts? Wayne Daniel? 0r someone like that.

I'm not sure we're quite that bad but the attack next year doesn't exactly look to have batsmen trembling

I upset Jerry Groome in the nest under the Gilligan stand one day. Was down there as a school boy and after seeing me bat he said 'Your not ging to make it as batsman, are you?' I replied' Isn't that why you are here training the kids, Mr Groome?'.

:lolol::lolol:

Groome was shockingly bad. I just looked up his record and he played 71 games for Sussex at an average of under 16. That's really poor for a specialist batsman -it shows how short of players Sussex were that they played him for that many games.

England international Monty Panesar joins Sussex CCC
16th November 2009
Sussex CCC is delighted to announce that Monty Panesar has agreed to join the County in 2010 and has signed a three year deal taking him through to the end of the 2012 season.
England international Monty Panesar joins Sussex CCC - Sussex CCC is delighted to announce that Monty Panesar has agreed to join the County in 2010 and has signed a three year deal taking him through to the end of the 2012 season.

Monty made his first class debut in 2001. It took until 2005 to truly establish himself as a regular in the Northamptonshire 1st XI, though once he did he was quickly in to the England team making his debut in India in March 2006, where the great Sachin Tendulkar was his first test victim. Since then, Monty has played in 39 tests taking 126 wickets at a shade over 34, though he lost his way a little during 2008 and has not played for England since saving the Cardiff Ashes Test with his batting in July 2009.

Panesar is currently spending the winter in South Africa playing for the Highveld Lions.

Mark Robinson, Sussex CCC Professional Cricket Manager, said: "I am very excited about the prospect of Monty joining us from 2010. It is a testament to the Club that we are able to attract a player of Monty’s calibre and I am sure he will play a key part in helping us achieve our aims for the coming season."

Monty Panesar said: “I am extremely grateful to Northamptonshire for all their support in my career so far and also for allowing me to make this move. I know Michael Yardy well from rooming with him on tour, so I am really looking forward to working under his captaincy and with the coaching staff at Hove to help the Club reclaim its Division 1 status and maintain its premier position in the shorter forms of the game. Success in this new challenge with Sussex can only improve my chances of reclaiming my place in the England standings, which is the pinnacle for any player.”
