My parents hail from Witney, home of the Wychwood brewery, where this was born. A couple of years ago my dad and I did the tour, it was something silly like a tenner to get in, with complimentary tasters and a goody bag of booze to take home. Not a bad way to kill an afternoon, if you don't mind the 4 hour round trip.

I had a placement year in Witney many moons ago. As I had a bit of cash in my pocket and little else to do, I got through a fair amount of the local ale. Glenny Wychwood, which was a predecessor of Hobgoblin in a pub called the House Of Windsor I believe - Happy Days

if you like the Hobgoblin, you'll probably find just about anything in the Pale Ale and Golden Ale styles agreeable. you might find the odd one not to your taste, but drinkable. try the Badgers range, and if your in Swindon i expect your'll get Oxford Gold which is nice.

most of all, i will heartly recommend the wheat beers, Erdinger is the drink of the gods.

You're right about Erdinger, I'm into their 'Dunkel' at the moment!

try Old Speckled Hen, about the best bottled beer IMo. Beware vintage Old Crafty Hen, electric soup.

If you are ever in Brighton , go to the Hobgoblin pub , try a pint of Dogs Bollocks .It really is very potent.Great pint , but it doesnt take many to make you fall over .
I remember seeing experienced drinkers and a roadie from a well known local punk band face down on the table by 9 oclock .

You've gotta love Asda :lolol:

Four for a fiver and a couple of pizzas

That's a tenner very well spent

Lidl often stock Hobgoblin and have it on offer. I used to enjoy a bottle of Summer Lightning but for some reason Morrisons and Waitrose don't stock it anymore round here, which is a shame.

About to open my 3rd tonight  Just turned 30 and stopped drinking lager at about 22. It's even cheaper if invest in a crate from somewhere. Just a couple are nice on a Friday evening, getting the last of the work out the way on the laptop (with an NSC break each time you have to replenish) so the weekend is free for footie and pub, while chatting up the latest lady friend on the phone.

Most of the big names have been mentioned in this thread already. Some of the really random ones are great. Just have fun and try the lot :) yum!

Gave up lager 2 years ago and discovered cider and ale. Love all thatchers especially Katy. I mostly drink tribute and doom bar, but as I get through different ales I am enjoying old speckled hen.
Sharps, who brew doom bar, have a conniseur range, that I have yet to try, one is called something like single brew and is apparently fabulous, the other is quadruple brew and is 10%, thats right 10% I will be trying them this weekend, Google sharps brewery.
So that I am not too bias towards SW ales I had some bottles of Sussex golden ale from M&S it is brewed in Horsham and was very nice.

Hobgoblin is good but in general ale is just piss. Real men drink stout or porter, the blacker and stronger the better, and none of that Guinness shite either!

The Earth and Stars had the audacity to run out of Dark Star Expresso Stout this evening so Conqueror it was.
