I’ve got a Nest, apart from the actual thermostat looking the part the Hive system seems to have a complete mind of it’s own
The first week it went in ( with a new boiler ) it was coming on at 2.30AM, it was timed to come on at 6. After searching a few forums I’ve worked out that it wanted to pre heat the house, FFS I don’t want it preheated at 2.30AM. I have switched something over that stops this now.
It seems to turn itself up when I’ve turned it down if I’m doing jobs at home, also wants to stay turned down when I’m sitting around cold.
I’m often found calling the Hive system a c*** in my hallway

I don't quite understand what you have here. You say Nest (we are talking Thermostats not Google Nest) and Hive which is also a thermostat. Why and how?

Its really not that hard. I did mine an about an hour. Just Googled the name of my boiler and Nest and the instructions I found on the were pretty straight forward. Just remember to take plenty of photos of where the wires go in case you need to retrace your steps.

My brother is having the same problem trying to find someone to fit his Nest, I suspect most trades can't be arsed with such a small job.

Have you a combi? I believe that is relatively straightforward whilst other boilers are more work.

Nest thermostat that controls the heating and hot water, maybe Google own this company.
Same idea as the Hive, I wish I had got the Hive system now.

Ah yeah. That is Google Nest. Google bought Nest a couple of years ago. The only discrepancy like the one you mention for me is that once when I had a fever I asked the Nest to heat the house to 25 C on a Sunday afternoon. Now, without fail, it does the same thing each Sunday and when I notice I am a little hot, I ask it to turn the temp to a more reasonable level. Frequently, after about half an hour I notice that the darned thing has turned the heat back up again.

I find it a little confusing after having a normal room thermostat for years. My wife has an app on her iPad for this system which is useful for adjusting the heating, I haven’t bothered with this.

Controlling the hot water is really good, never had an issue with the on and off times.

Over-all I love it and it's phone/Google Home features. It looks cool too lol!

I also have Nest - had it installed same time as new boiler nearly 2 years ago. It goes through a learning process to work out when it needs to be coming on and generally I think it's pretty much spot on. It's also very easy to set schedules anyway.

I use the app and sometimes just ask Alexa (I prefer Alexa to Google) to change the temperature.

It's also handy when you've been out and heading home. You can check what the home temperature is and bump it up if necessary before you get home.

It's also quite fun when I'm out ... like last night when I was at the Worthing game. My mate asked me if I'd checked if my wife had the heating on ... she had ... and it was very tempting to turn it down

Exactly! Before my two were away at uni, I knew they were wacking the heating up when I was at work. Once I got this system installed, it was only a quick look at the app and I could see their misdemeanour and rectify it!

I had to replace my thermostat a while back; I bought the cheapest one Toolstation had (about six quid IIRC, I ain't lining their pockets).
As a bonus it has little pins on the back of the dial that let you set a maximum temp. I've set it to 19.

You are doing it wrong.

There is an option in the Hive settings to either:

1 - have the heating start at the specified time

or

2 - have the temperature reached by the time you specify.

The system "learns" how long it takes your house to heat and will start accordingly if you choose option 2 above.

Thanks for the advice but I have got the Nest system which is slightly different to the Hive.

I am a plumber but don’t wire up heating controls, I work in many homes changing radiators and most customers with the Hive seem happy with the way it works.
I’ve spoken to people with the Nest and they also find it confusing, as mentioned already I had to go on various forums to get my head round how to work the system to control the heating how we want it.
It doesn’t seem as user friendly as I thought it was going to be.

The Nest was recommended by the installer who didn’t know how to stop the heating coming on at night when I asked his advice.

Edit- I have just noticed I mentioned the Hive at the end of the post you quoted

Had the Hive system for just over 4 years. Got it with free installation on an Amazon offer. Works really well also got the light bulbs in most rooms. As others have said great to control when away from the house, for boosting heat so house is warm when come in or for controlling lights to make it look like people are in. Heating and lights can also be voice controlled by Alexa when in the house.

You mention Hive twice in the post I quoted and Nest only once...

I have Tado. Very simple to install and there is a very helpful phone line. My Mum had Nest already installed in a house she moved to and it was rubbish. Had it removed.
For me having the location working saves a fortune. Never know what time we're home and so only turns on the heating when we are half a mile from home. Having it also set up with Alexa makes turning it on or off very simple as well.

People....this is a Crodo thread. What are you all thinking?

(that said, some very interesting posts. I got Hive via British Gas many years ago, but it stopped working after I left British Gas in pursuit of cheaper fuel.

In general, however, I turn the heat off when out, and turn it on if I feel a bit cold. The insulation in the extension is so good the extension acts as a heat store for the whole house. If I switch the rads off at night when the thermostat had been set at 20 the temperature will have dropped to no less than 18 overnight, even if it is around zero outside. Nice house. We don't heat upstairs where the bedrooms are located because we prefer cool at night.

Insulation is the solution.

The idea of talking to my phone to change the temperature in different rooms while commuting from work, or driving back from the Amex is the stuff of nightmares. I'd rather burn the ****ing hose down than have to bugger about like that.

And if you want to deter burglars put in motion sensitive lights. Having random-set or programmed 'unexpected' light events is akin to attempting to bag a pheasant by shooting randomly in the air. Or better still, lie in wait in the undergrowth with a gun.

There has been no charge for this voluble advice.)
