Less than impressed with the police, who seemed to be more interested in getting him for no insurance than the situation I have been left with.

Out of curiosity, what were you expecting/hoping the police would do?

When a similar thing happened to my ex-girlfriend, the police didn't even want to know about that. They said they had too many other things to do than chase after non-insured drivers and that if my girlfriend wanted to pursue it, she should go to small claims - but advised her against it.

Sounds like the police took some interest in your case at least - even though I know it's little consolation for you.

I think if it goes to court the magistrate can order that compensation is paid to you. You have to fill out some forms stating yor losses as a result of the accident and they make a judgement on what you should be awarded. Its done through some sort of criminal compensation scheme. Worth a try.
