The only thing that worries me about Hinsh is his height- he is not tall enough for a centre-half

Complete rubbish. That is a very English attitude to the game. Neither Franco Baresi nor Lothar Matthaeus were giants yet they played at the top level, often in central defence or as sweepers.

If a player can read the game, has pace and tackle he can play central defence.

Chris Perry is not a tall player, yet he has played his whole career at centre back and at the top level.

Exactly. El-Abd seems to out jump most strikers anyway

Spot on. Bobby Moore and Franz Beckenbauer weren't exactly Crouches either.

Perhaps, but where are they likely to ply their trade and which top British clubs have smallish central defenders as 1st choice?

Perry at Charlton?

Carragher is not a man mountain.

Perry is shite though- try thinking about set pieces i.e Corners where people like Furlong and Carl Cort will simply out jump Hinsh

So get El Abd to mark them as he's excellent in the air.

Horses for courses.... so get McCammon to mark them then? ??? may be not.

I think, UB, the fact that you have can only think of two above average defenders at a smallish club and one 6ft 1inch defender at Liverpool proves the point that small central defenders don't make it at the top level in Britain. Hardly complete rubbish as you suggested?

Hinsh is 5ft 10 ins
McShane is 5ft 8 ins
both too small imo for the top level

I think it is an attitude of the game that they cannot suceed rather than fact. Height is useful in defence, but if they have other qualities they can play there.

I was coming at in a completely selfish way. I.E both may well be here for a while because of their height.

I personally rate them both very highly

I agree UB that other qualities are useful and Hinish will need to be very good as these to last the course in the championship

Lets hope he does come back the player he was- we need him or another centre-half at the very least

The official site suggested he could be back in contention by end of Jan... he was looking like an excellent prospect before his nasty injury... could be a selection dilemma for MM pretty soon then... would be nice to have one of those for a change, wouldn't it?...

Sounds stupid but is has happened in the last few games that I have seen. When QPR brought on Nygaard (sp) McCammon marked him and he marked Millwall's tallish forward.

Jeez, Brian, cut him some slack. He's still only 19.

I am not knocking what McShane is and has done for us he has been superb but Man Utd have signed another central defender and a full back which pushes him further down their pecking order and with his obvious lack of experience, which was shown against Southampton when he was arguably 'caught out ' for both goals, due to his age, I think that NOW would be the ideal time to try signing him as one for the present and for the forseeable futuire. I would not think the fee would be that high either.
