Glad that he has signed, but it would be 'great news' if had signed till 2007 or 2008. The club would surely have rather signed up one of their potentially best players for more than one year, so it is hardly a great demonstration of Hinsh's commitment to a long term future with the Albion.
Regarding players signing new contracts, so far it seems to be the players in our squad that with the greatest respect would be unlikely to attract much interest from other clubs signing up. If we can tie up Kuipers, Knight and Reid on long-term contracts then that really would be 'great news'.
I can understand offering a year to Butters, Carpenter (both due to age), and Hart, Mayo and Oatway (due to reservations as to whether they can hold their own at this level in the long-term), but would be amazed if Hinsh was offered a year. A comparable player, Adam Virgo, was signed for 3 years and Dean Hammond (fringe player) for 18 months.
It is more likely that Hinsh is waiting to see how the club progresses and he can get out at the end of next season if the worst case scenario occurs. Along with Leon he is arguably our most valuable playing asset and at his age could quite conceivably be a leading player for many years to come.
If he keeps improving at his current rate (agree with DKM's criticisms) and fulfills his potential, we cannot realistically expect to keep hold of him for longer than 18 months. But we will make a tidy sum on him to help tide us over until Falmer arrives.
I expect it's only a year as we don't know about Falmer so I wouldn't be surprised if there was a clause stating improved contract will be available if we get a YES. Club being careful with money and I know Jarrett and Molango have longer deals but they are on very small wages wheras I expect Hinch's would be worth a lot more.
