When you attend a public event the Police and organisers are supposed to be able to deal with any eventuality to keep you and the rest of the public safe.

That day, the Police didn't.

I think one of the fans talking about it on that programme hit the nail on the head. People under the age of 18 can't imagine how bad that disaster really was, as they would never have had stood in an overcrowded terrace.

However my dad stood in that end in '81, and then there was complaints about that end.

:(

I agree with the 96 families......no more terracing in grounds. The Taylor report reconmended all seater stadiums. ! I cant help but wonder how many fans behind each goal ......sit down the kop included .

But on what justification should there be no more terracing? It can't be safety, the 96 were killed due to asphyxiation caused by being pressed up against the fences, and the nature of the pens at Hillsborough.

Every time someone starts a serious debate about the reintroduction of well designed, secure safe terracing a Hillsborough victim's family member is wheeled out to stifle such debate, as politicians and administrators are scared of losing votes and causing offence.

It's as if a number of the clubs realise that they would not be able to justify the ridiculous prices charged to attend matches today if they were not providing the 'benefit' of a plastic seat for 90 minutes.

Just because something might have been valid in 1989 does not necessarily make it valid in 2009, and we end up with the sterile insipid atmosphere at matches with all seater stadia up and down the country, as the gentrification of the game continues.

Thick scousers on the off-chance of getting in? Thick scousers who think they might be able to break in?

I don't see why Liverpool are seen as the tragic victim of all this. The people who died/were injured are rightly seen as that, but their killers in my opinion were their fellow fans.

i usually enjoy your attempts to wind people up on here and cause controversy thomas, but this time you are just making an utter utter **** of yourself

According to the Interim Hillsborough report 'however, the police witnesses who most impressed me did not consider the number of ticketless fans to be inordinately large. This accords with two other sources of evidence'

See Page 43 of the report, available from the South Yorkshire Police website

Quite, but when people post lies it's only right that people respond.

( and seeing that lying plays a major part in the story anyway... )

The thing is, it isn't/wasn't loutish behaviour to see the pitch, realise kick-off was near, and try and get to the terrace as quick as possible. It was normal behaviour, a normal reaction, and any police who knew what they were doing would be experienced in the situation and know this.

They would also know that some fans would try to gain entry without a ticket, thereby creating a risk of overcrowding, and act accordingly ie not open gates and let them, and others, in. Sadly, these policemen didn't seem to realise any of these obvious things.
Catch 22. If they hadn't opened the gates, would we be talking about the deaths of fans at the turnstiles. They opened the gates not as a gesture of goodwill to ticketless fans but because of crushing outside. The wonderful science of hindsight tells us that was not the solution.

TCB, it wasn't like that, honest. I'm not saying that the behaviour of the fans is beyond reproach, but to say that it was fans killing fans is WAY out of line.

At last, someone agrees with me.

One minute people are spouting the Taylor report as gospel and the next, when the argument for all seater stadia doesn't suit, it is irrelevant. What's it to be?

A few things....

1) What led to the congestion at the Turnstile ?

2) What solution was offered at the time, but was ignored ?

3) Why was there a delay in opening the exit gate ?

Heysel was totally avoidable and was due to the pure hooliganism of the some liverpool fans

I think you'll find that Heysel was as much Juve's fans' fault as Liverpool's or have you forgotten about the missiles and lumps of concrete they were throwing at Liverpool fans before the wall collapsed? Perhaps Liverpool fans were aware of the violence of Roma fans they'd encountered the year before? Still, it's Scousers-they must be at fault.

one of the lads at work was telling me today how his Dad and 14 year old sister were near the pitch at the game as Forest fans, they had four bodies laid out on the pitch in front of them, his sister has never been to a game since and probably wont in the future.

Truly shocking for all who were there
