Look like a prop from a 60's SciFi B movie and not in a good way.

Quite funny spending all that money on a Hi-Fi, making sure you have the right interconnects and speaker leads, and then connect it to an MP3 player! :jester: Guess it's good as you can hear the audio compression really clearly!

The Shanling (which is designed and produced in China) is a bit of an unknown
quantity, some people swear by tube technology( inside the four circley things!)
but it's not always the most reliable. I'd be tempted to go for one of the all in one units from a established audio company such as the superb Arcam Solo or the
Linn Classik. Both these will set you back about a grand, leaving you enough for your speakers. The Opera are very nice, but also have a listen to new models from companies such as B&W and Kef.Don't forget you'll have to budget for stands and cables if they're not floorstanders. As for ipods... well, you can't beat a proper
Hi-Fi!

I had a pair of Kefs and a pair of Mordent Short, and compared both sets on my Quad system. The Kefs had excellent imaging, but were confining in their size (for the money). The MS speakers splayed the sound more, giving an impression of a wider origin, but then had not got the same dimensional imaging quality.
Somewhere there's a happy medium suited for my room-space/amp power and optimum volume, but for now the MS will do okay.
Quad do make speakers, but not only are they huge (for the ones that would suit my amp) and look like radiators, they are also hugely expensive. So - it's a matter of horses for courses imo.
