Spot on.

One of the most under-rated and misunderstood England players I've ever seen.

Thanks Emile.

Do you like your managers in sheepskin coats as well?

How many international goals has Heskey scored? How many has Crouch scored? Yet England managers prefer Heskey to Crouch. That never ceases to baffle me.

Heskey's hold up play is brilliant - it's not all about goals. Plus he has been the best foil for Rooney undoubtedly...

Yes, that's right, everyone that agrees with you understands football and everyone that doesn't is thick and has no idea what they're talking about. I forgot, everything in football is black and white isn't it, there's no room for opinions. Tool.

Nope. I've been wrong many times before, and I'll be wrong many times again.

In THIS instance, it REALLY is a basics of football case.

It's not AT ALL about goals. The stats with Heskey in and out of the team over TEN years speak for themselves.

This business of footballers "retiring" from international football, it's just attention seeking, just f*** off.

No, no it isn't. It's simply an opinion. Your opinion is that England look a far better team with Heskey in it, than without him.

However, it is the opinion of Vicente Del Bosque, Maradona, Dunga, Loew and other two bob non entities that their teams were better served without a 6'5" tall slow lumbering forward with the turning circle of a barge in their national teams.

Now I'll go along with you to a point: England did indeed look better with him than without him. However, IMO we'll simply never develop into a serious threat all the while players of his ability are anywhere near our first team. He can't even get into the Villa first team. Does that make me an idiot? Don't answer that, I don't actually care.

IDIOT HOLE.

I agree, if we had BETTER strikers, Heskey would be NOWHERE near the England team. The SLIGHT problem there is we DON'T.

The managers you listed there all had far better options at their disposal. If they had landed in Capello's chair, who's to say they wouldn't have made the same decisions?

Sorry, not entirely convinced by this. I can't help thinking we might look more threatening against the very top teams without Heskey but playing a formation that doesn't belong in the jurassic era. Capello's failure for me was that he didn't really give this much thought.

The major problem with playing a lump up front is the temptation is to knock everything long. This is particularly so when playing two up front.

This can work against teams in lower divisions but better teams have better defenders who are not overly concerned about palying against a big lump.

Playing a big bloke does not mean you HAVE to knock it long - and if the team is playing well it can work. But when players are off form, or feeling a bit tired, the escape ball becomes first choice.

So for me - Heskey did work at times in 4-4-2 when qualifying, but just looked plain embarrassing at World Cup level. And that is what Capello should have sorted out.

I appreciate I am the equivalent of a footballing moron for these views - but so be it.

If Heskey had not been selected for the WC then logic dictates either Carlton Cole or Darren Bent would have got the nod, both players rejected from Top 7 sides and neither renowned for a good first touch.

The whole Heskey debate has to be seen in terms of what alternatives there were available, i.e. only WORSE ones.
