I don't know what your reasons are for not wanting to get absorbed into a charity are but all I do know is that Off The Fence have a brilliant street team - Project Antifreeze.

They are a team of people who are out on the streets handing out sandwiches, hot drinks, sleeping bags etc and saving homeless people's lives at times like this.

They have such in depth knowledge of the homeless people in Brighton. They know where they are or will be to meet and give help to etc.

But whatever - all the best - great work!

I don't want to get involved with a charity because I don't wish to be organised by other people. It's easy enough to walk from Kemptown to Church Road with a trolley full of flasks and rolls and give them out to the people I see sleeping rough. I do not wish to be sent off to all corners of the city by someone with a clipboard . It's a couple of folks giving out some soup to those we see as we walk. Thank you for your encouragement though.

well said that man. i see a lot of street sleepers in bognor where i work and so many of them just appreciate a chat with down to earth people. What they dont like is people approaching them in high vis vests being all preachy.

Antifreeze are a great bunch of caring people. An old schoolfriend of mine is involved. They are, however, an Evangelical organisation, and I feel a little uncomfortable when religion becomes involved in charitable work. Given the choice, I would rather support people providing for physical needs rather than spiritual needs.

Good luck with this. And thanks for posting about it on NSC.

There have always been local charities doing good work on the streets of Brighton. I remember the work of the Brighton Hostel, based in Islingword Road, back in the sixties. But the issue never goes away. It's good to see that some people realise that a little bit of friendly contact with people on the street is a good thing. It won't change the world, but it might cheer a few people up.

I'd be up for helping out if/when I can. At the beginning of the year I dropped a load of clothes down to Off the Fence because I figured it was better to give to them rather than keep sticking stuff in a charity shop (I doubt the people that REALLY need clothes are going to pop to their local Oxfam). It seems like a really good setup, and it gave me the urge to do more to give help to those that need it.

Good luck, and well done.

Myself and another couple of people go out on a Wednesday night in Brighton and give soup and tea to rough sleepers, we have only been able to do this off and on for the last few months and tonight I learned the other guys that did it with me won't be able to do it from now on. We only do it when it's especially cold but I would like to make it a regular thing. I was wondering if anyone here would be able to help out at all? I heat up all the soup and tea at home and provide the styrofoam cups and put it all in flasks etc so won't cost you anything (we take dog treats as well, so if any of you have dogs if you could spare a few, always appreciated). We go from Kemptown to Church St from 10 to 12 at night so obviously not ideal for a lot of you but I pay your bus fare home if you don't live near Church St. We will only go in pairs, hence why I am asking if anyone would be able to lend their time at all? It looks like we are in for another cold spell so the folks on the streets of Brighton could do with a hot drink/soup. Thanks for reading, Nibble.

good effort nibble

Myself and a couple of mates occasionally raid the bins of the Pyecombe M&S shortly after midnight when they bin all their perfectly good but out of date sandwiches, sushi etc and hand it out in Brighton around West Street, can highly recommend it as an alternative night out in Brighton!

Fine work Nibble. I number of years ago i used to work for a homeless project when i lived in Brighton. As you said previously, a drink, some food and a chat can make a big difference to people who find themselves on the streets. Especially during these periods of cold weather

Fantastic effort - I wanted to find a way of using 'Change for Change', as when out shopping or nights out a lot of people find copper coins 1p/2p's just a pain to carry round but everyone I spoke to, supermarkets/airlines etc already had their own charities, so now I collect them and donate to charities when I have £5 or so. If there was a way of collecting everyone on here's loose change (or even in Brighton/Hove) and getting it to you then at least we'd know where it's going and not paying for some charity exec's car.

Why has the GREAT man himself, UNREST not started a supplementary thread about this already? Something along the lines of:

"So there I was, making my way HOME in my WINTER coat after meeting my SAUCE for a late night rendezvous at DICK'S BAR, when I STOPPED for a brief rest on a bench in KEMPTOWN. The next thing I know, some resting THESPIAN was forcing a scalding HOT styrofoam cup of LEEK and POTATO soup in my hand whilst PERFORMING the ghost scene from Hamlet. The soup was not bad, but the croutons tasted ALOT like DOG TREATS.

-------------

UNREST out!

The most curious thing..
You might be better off being organised by a charity than going alone. Admirable intent but some rough sleepers can be a bit "rough".

That coat must be getting a bit shabby by now.

If I was homeless, cold and hungry, I was just thinking what sort of soup I would most like. Heinz Big Soup maybe unless one of Waitrose fresh efforts - they're nice.
