I had the chance to apply months ago as I work for an Olympic Partner.
Would have got half the time off paid and the other half out of holiday. 3 days training and accommodation paid for.

This getting paid issue is missing the point (in my experience). It's rare that you ge the chance to be involved with something this monumental - a major world event which could give you memories and friendships for the rest of your life. Just my view.

This.

And that is why we have all applied.

If we don't get selected then I'll be having two weeks off work anyway, just buying tickets for just about anything I can see. Can see the Athletics, Cycling and Swimming being MASSIVLEY over subscribed, but I wouldn't mind seeing the Table Tennis, Badmington, Rowing, Boxing, football.........

I don voluntery work with special needs children and have done for various groups since I was 12, you get so much from it and you learn so much about yourself and the world.

It was, although a not good one, a joke.

That is very noble of you and in the right spirit. Olympic Volunteering won't benefit any charitable cause but will put hundreds of thousands of pounds of savings if not more into huge multiple million pound companies.

Most volunteers will probably get black bin bags and litter picking duties. All the plum positions will go to staff from corporate sponsors.

That's not true, if applying, EDF Energy made it perfectly clear you could well end up with a shitty job and should not expect it even to be in the Olympic Park!

Hi mate, if you could PM me, I would love to pick your brains on what EDF are giving you and fellow staff around the Olympics...I have a meeting with them in two weeks about an Athlete led engagement project that should give the staff a considerable package in return...

As regards Volunteering, it is the basis of every games, and is a box of chocolates. I would myself volunteer, except I am bloody working...

How on earth do some people class VOLUNTEERING a con? If people were paid there would be massive outcry about how it's costing the taxpayer. You DON'T HAVE to help out, christ. As for the complete badger, dear oh dear, completely out of your depth.

Helpers are unpaid. We are training 500 stewards (paid) for the Olympics and Paralympics over the next couple of years. Lots of FE Colleges are involved in an initiative called "Bridging the Gap" - gets them a BTEC or NVQ in stewarding, work experience then paid work, plus an interview with a Security Industry company if they want to follow that line of work. They can also progress to a Foundation Degree in Event Management with New Bucks Uni if they want to work in public events that require crowd management and planning. Going to be a whole new workforce of properly trained guys on the market in the next few years who have aspirations for careers in the industry - means that the old dross will get elbowed out for the new blood! We have links with Wembley, The Football Association (Premier and Football League), Group 4 and loads of other companies who are looking at being more aggressive when it comes to bidding for contracts...much more stringent with their checks, more structured training and career paths and the possibility of compulsory qualifications and assessments being in place in the very near future.
