Anyone know if a metal detector will pick up white gold?

I've just managed to lose my wedding ring somewhere in the garden and Mrs Hillian is not amused.

You can try building your own!! Saw this in the DK Science Experiments book. No idea if it will work though!!

You will need:
an empty CD Case
Double sided tape
an AM radio
Battery-powered calculator

Stick the calculator to one side of the CD case with some tape. Turn the calculator on
Stick the radio to the other side of the case so both radio and calculator face inwards (ie when you try to close the case, they move together).
Turn the radio on and tune it to the highest AM band, making sure it is not tuned into a radio station. Turn up the volume until you hear the loud hissing.
Close the case until you hear a loud tone.
Now open the case slowly until you can only just hear the tone.

Now take it in the garden and crawl around moving it over the ground. When it moves over something metal, the tone will grow louder, apparently!!
