Not wishing to be a pedant, but that line is from Battle of Britain.

Hope and Glory was the boys on the bomb sites shouting "Let's smash stuff up" and bribing girls so that they could look in their knickers. Sarah Miles was in it. Written and produced by John Boorman, Charley's Dad.

Yes, that's it. His Grandad teaches him how to bowl a googly whilst his Dad is away, then bowls his Dad out when he comes home.

Not sure if it was a book, but it sounds like the 1987 film "Hope and Glory"

Straying off topic a bit ...

The sequel "Queen and Country" only came out last year. Excellent IMO but reviews.generally mixed. Would make an excellent double bill for Duke of Yorks. They have some interesting films on this week ... bit far to travel though.
