Help needed famous players from 1940's

My grandson has just rung me asking for famous footballers from the 1940's for his homework i cant think of anyone, does anyone know any ?

Was there a reason he did not fight in WWII?

Stretching it a little bit, from 1948 one player even had an Iron Cross.
Apart from the two already mentioned this one probably made the biggest impression on me in the 50's.

Bert Trautmann and Ferenc Puskas - both probably more associated with the 50's but they were already top flight in the late 40's

Yes, but he was twenty when it finished. I wondered if there was a specific reason why he was not sent to the front when he reached the age of conscription and Everest has explained it.
