Looking at the design it's clearly a cast iron General Post Office Elkington Gatic cover with the portcullis-styled frame.

If I was to take a punt, I'd say it was probably installed in the 1970s and made in Kettering.
You must be an absolute hoot at parties !

The agenda for NSC today is:

How to end the Russia/Ukraine war and bring about peace
The Premier League fallout with the referee scandal
The US election and how it affects us
The best films of 2024
How to identify a manhole cover

Don't change NSC. just don't.

Definitely not a GPO/BT joint box cover. I know about those things.

I think the other posters may have mistakenly taken this for a taking the piss type witty imaginative post....

It runs "down" (under) my road. If you walk down Northcote Road after the rain you can hear the river running beneath.

Maybe we could hire a village hall and I can bring along my projector.
Either you're Kerry Mayo in disguise, or you're talking to yourself, mate.

I'd love to see this pop up as a specialist subject on Mastermind, fascinating!

The Interweb is a strange old place - there is a website based in Israel called the "ultimate manhole covers site" - it includes an interactive map of the world showing the location of some manhole covers - unfortunately there are none in Brighton, but there is a manhole featured in Epsom and plenty in London - who'd have thought it ;-)

THis is something to do with those Terrorist squirrels Bush was prattling on about when his meds wore off . . . .

It could be An underground network of nutters . . . There's plenty of them about .. . . Some of them above ground, running countries

I can't believe everyone on this thread, making assumptions about the gender of the hole. How do you know it isn't a womanhole?
