Only being slightly patronising then mate.

FFS, she worked bloody hard getting those A levels at a Community College not noted for its academic prowess as well as coming top in her year for her GCSE results all A's and a couple of B's. Then to suggest you are surprised she got in, devalues all the work she put in.

Perhaps you have been cocooned in education too long and need to get out in the real world. Patronising twat

Thats being truthful not patronising or trying to devalue the work she put in. My surprise is that at Southampton the average offer is AAB. If you think that saying that is patronising or devaluing, it is you who has the problem, not me. You may be confusing hard work with ability, again that is your problem not mine.

Actually, I was trying to help by suggesting that her performance in examinations at university would be of greater importance as they would be a more accurate reflection of ability and aptitude. I know that when some people want to change course they simply give up on the one they are currently reading. As I have been an admissions tutor in the past, albeit in a different university but with similar standing, I have come accross this situation before and know how difficult it is to then make a decision that is fair and does not devalue the work of other applicants while havingh a high degree of confidence that the student is capable of completing the course. However, I also pointed out some other pertinent issues that may have been useful such as departmental quotas and application levels and fees.

I'm sorry if you found that patronising, but at least I wasn't rude - thicko

I think where I find someones comments condesending and patronising I have every right to be rude.

AS for calling me a thicko, you know nothing whatsoever about me, so again perhaps you should keep your childest comments to your students who perhaps are at an age where they can "appreciate " your humour.

I always have found that if someone asks for help, its best to offer advice as best you can as opposed to sticking the knife in.

I think you are being over sensitive Dave, I didn't see Chips post as being anymore than brutally honest about BAG's chances with the grades she has for the subject she wants to switch to. It's very likely she will told the grades aren't good enough when she applies so maybe forwarned is forearmed?

I agree with you and I am sure she does also. I just didnt like the inference that she should not have been let in with the grades she attained by some jumped up teacher

No, you made the inference not me. You are the one with the chip upon your shoulder. I was just trying to tell it how it is. I called you thicko because you called me a patronising twat. Perhaps you can't understand satire.

I am not a teacher and never have been. I think that you have a fundamental misunderstanding about the nature and role of a university education. That is probably the best explanation for your vitriolic response to a genuine attempt to be helpful.

Would you rather I had said, "with those excellent A level results you should be applying to read English at Magdalen College, Oxford. Forget Southampton it's only for losers"?

To be fair chip you are acting like almost every other soton academic, so they must teach people to act like dicks here at some point.

Anyway - an update - i have decided not to chase a lost cause, and have realised that i like this uni (even though a lot of the staff are useless & unhelpful to the extreme - if anyone wants to come here - a simple bit of advice, apply somewhere else if you want help from the people who are meant to teach you), however it is the course that is the problem.

I have been looking at the degree in nursing for years, but have always been discouraged because of my fingers. I phoned them up, and have an assessment after easter to see whether it is viable, and theyve assured me that it is more than likely that i can do it. So ive applied for it, and am going to carry on my current course until the end of the year.

Thanks to everyone who helped me, and sorry if you now think you weren't helpful, but you were really!

University academics are not there to teach. I know that may be difficult to understand, but you should not blame us for your inabilites to grasp our subjects. We are hired on our research ability because that is what we spend at least 50% of our time doing. At most, 25% of our time is for undergraduate teaching as that is the proportion of income that teaching generates for the University. You would find the same in any top flight university. I wonder how many staff would describe students such as yourself as useless to the extreme? I am sure that is not a common student experience at Soton.

Actually, most of us will be quite helpful. On Friday you said you wanted to study English and now it is nursing. Unless you are clear in your own mind what you want to do, how would you expect anyone to be able to help you? I was trying to point out to you that even if you didn't have the entry grades for English per se, if you could demonstrate a good performance on your current course that that would probably be acceptable. If that makes me a dick then you seem to be suffering from the same problem as your father. You are probably still coming to terms with the difference between school and university - that takes some time. If you persevere, I am sure that you will reap the rewards in later years. I'm sorry that I tried to be helpful - I won't be such a dick next time.

Southampton offers unrivaled opportunities in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Medicine to study with some real world leaders in their fields. Uniquely, there is a strong culture of cross disciplinary collaboration. In return, students are expected to apply themselves and accept the consequences of their own actions and limitations - just as the academics have to. Some people cannot cope with that. Don't blame the university becuase you would have the same problems at Imperial, Bristol, Oxford, Cambridge, etc. That is what makes a good university and gives value to its degrees. If you want an easy time go to Brighton or Middlesex. Its the difference beteween the Premier League and Conference South.

It really is quite disconcerting that someone like you guides and teaches young minds. You may or may not be good at your research work, but your pedagogical manner absolutely stinks.

Good luck Bag and point well proven with this one :nono:

Quite a derogatory response. I have some friends who went to look at Soton for the medical courses, and decided not to sign up based on the attitude of the people they met that day. Must be a Soton thing. Soton is, however, top 5 for medicine. They chose Liverpool instead, which is equally ranked with Soton.

Southampton is only ranked 20th for English anyway, so you are probably better off aiming for a Premiership University.....

Better than the "unrivalled" mathematics though - not even top 25!

God BAG, I have to say you have done pretty well to stick it in Southampton for as long as you have. I went to the institute for 5 days and it was shit. Thats the institute and Southampton.

The attitude of people here is amazingly incompetant.

Like it or not chip - but i currently pay over a thousand pounds for people like you to help me research, and i get f*** all help, and im not the only student here who if they had realised the attitude problems of the staff, they wouldnt have come here.

I came here because i thought people like you would be helpful teaching me new things, that are interesting, not just fordism and modernisation.

When I went to the interview for my MA the Lecturer said to me in a very patronising tone 'Now you do realise there will be people from Oxford and Cambridge on this course' Cockhead.

Saying that though at both Bolton and Sussex I meet some really great people who enhanced my learning and academic experience no end.
