Ok peeps, here's the deal.

My sociology degree really isnt working out for me - and i have realised that English is my passion. Unfortunately, to change into this course, I needed AAB or ABB in my a-levels, and i got BCCC. So i'm needing a lot of help to write an email to get me into this course!!!!

So this is where you helpful people come in!!!

What should I put in this email? So far i have

Dear ****

I regret to say that I obtained a B and 3 Cs in my A levels (I was 6 marks off a B for my english.) I studied French, German and General Studies for the other subjects.
***************************

Please PLEASE help me on this - i am so desperate to get on this course.

Well General Studies doesn't count for a start.

If I were you I'd just put together a heart felt letter detailing why you have such a pasion for English and cross your fingers!

I switched courses at Sussex University after two terms - with no difficulty.

Mind you, the ethos of Sussex University in those days was very much geared up to encourage that sort of thing.

The key step in the process was going to see the people who ran the course I wanted to switch to. They were very supportive and advised me how to make the switch.

I'd suggest you do the same, Laura. Talk to them, don't e-mail them.

I have come to the conclusion that I would be better suited to English, rather than continuing my current degree, Sociology.

I feel that, although my A-Level grades, would not be enough to automatically qualify for a place on the English course, I have proven myself to be a hard worker and feel that I would be nothing short of a success story for the English department.

To quote the famous Al Capp "Success is following the pattern of life one enjoys most."

I regret to say that I obtained a B and 3 Cs in my A levels (I was 6 marks off a B for my english.) I studied French, German and General Studies for the other subjects. I realise that this isn't good enough for the entrance requirements over three A levels, however by UCAS points this is enough points, so surely this shows my academic ability? So I am asking you to please consider my application.

Ever since I was young, English has been my passion - I remember reading books for 11 year olds when I was 6! When I read a book, it makes me escape to another world, and that's why I love reading. I love reading books by the Bronte sisters and Austen, as they take me to an era which I find fascinating. I know Pride and Prejudice in this society has mainly been portrayed through the eyes of the BBC adaptation (everyone mentiones Darcy coming out of the lake as their best bit of P&P!), however I found the book to be much more visually entertaining. I think that studying English had always been my passion, I just hadn't realised it until this year!

If I was accepted into this course, I would value the chance immensely, and I feel that my commitment to the course would far outweigh the exam results that I had received in the past.

Absolutely right. Show them your enthusiasm. You can only do it face to face.

I wouldn't start with I regret to advise, build up how much you want to do the course, suck them in, then hit them that your exam marks are not quite there.

 Agree with LB and DKM

I wrote a letter when I changed courses from computing ( :thud: ) to Real Estate Management.

I also went to see the school of REM and let my face be known. Got chatting, appear very keen, friendly and enthusiastic. I am sure there will be others wanting to switch etc. and making a special effort to go and see them should stand you in good stead. Phone up and arrange to talk to someone in person.

Then perhaps send the letter thanking them for meeting you and push home the fact that you are excited by the chance to change courses.

Hello everyone. Spookily, I always seem to be reading the same books and liking the same dodgy films as that other intellectual tit(an), Man of Harveys and he's one smart cookie with a (flukey) 2.1 from a proper university and everything. So...let me do English please please please - sociology is nothing but crap about Burkheim, the Registar General's Scale and the improved lot of clerical workers since the 1890s. f*** that for a game of soldiers for three years. Cheers GEEZERS, yours, BORED.

Ah yes. Good point TD.

Maybe something like.....

After much deliberation I have decided that I would be far more suited to studying English, than continuing my current course, Sociology.

Then perhaps explain (briefly) why you do not want to continue Soc. and that you are excited by the possiblity of studying English.

The amount of people that used to change is unbelievable. Show that you have put some serious thought into this and that you are not likely to change your mind again.

I wouldn't say that. They've specified that they want the points over 3 A-Levels for a reason.

Surely if you send an e-mail it will be deleted straight away, that's what i'd do. You will get much further if you can muster up the stones to actually go and talk to someone, at least if they're going to fob you off with some bullshit excuse they have to do it to your face.

P.S If you're that passionate about english, why do you need to come on here to ask how to write a letter

Asking advice so as to gain the best chance of a shot at following her passion.

Anyone can write letters, it doesn't mean you are an English buff.

My point exactly. If you're meant to be some sort of english buff then you should be able to construct a clear and well articulated letter with your eyes shut and your hands tied behind your back.

Not Luton! Thank God
Another tip would be to go to see your current course tutor and convince them that English is better for you. They won't want you to keep on their course (its only going to look bad on them if they dispassionate students) but they'l hardly want you to leave the uni altogether. If they reccomend you for a switch to English then it boosts your case.

Something else they like is if you have become part of the University life, joined societys etc . If you big that up and hint that you might leave the uni altogether if you can switch then theyll be on there knees to let you stay.

Good luck. It took me 7 months to realise I hated Chemistry and move into something that was far more interesting and useful.
