Went last July and used Papillion Helicopters, the cheaper option. They pick you up from the hotel in Vegas and take you to Boulder Heliport about 20 mins away. Was great - took sandwich and champers landing in the canyon, great pilot. Can only recommend too...

We drove to the Canyon and did a ride with Papillon, they were fantastic. We managed to get two of the three front seats which are worth paying a little extra for because you have a completely unobstructed view and the windscreen goes right down to your feet so you really get a sense of the depth of the canyon. They do have to spread the weight equally in the helicopter though so you can't be 100% guaranteed to get the front seats even if you request them.

We stayed overnight at the Canyon, had a picnic while watching the sun set. It was amazing because in the evening the sun light is less intense so you really see the red/orange colours of the rock the longer shadows help to define the structures within the canyon. We flew the next morning, which is supposed to be a good time because by midday/afternoon the heat causes thermals to rise from the ground which can cause turbulence. Our ride was really smooth which meant the pilot could get really close to things which they might not be able to do in more difficult flying conditions.

However you do it, it's a great experience.

2004 Drove out there past Lake Mead ,over the Boulder/Hoover Dam...(believe now they have built a flyover by the Dam)...my son did the flight out to the GC and a helicopter down the canyon to go white water rafting...it was snowing at the top of the canyon...the following day drove to Death Valley...amazing salt flats...then drive round a corner and there is the worlds lowest golf course with superb greens...it must cost a fortune to water them...great experience, would love to go again.

Been lucky to do both an early morning plane over the Grand Canyon and also a helicopter ride on another holiday. The helicopter really trumps the plane and will blow you away

I took off from near the south rim and they fly lowish over the trees while playing classical music, Then when they start playing the theme music to 2001 A Space Odyssey and when the large kettle drums kick in, the helicopter banks to the to the right and the Canyon is right there in front of you. Almost sh@t myself. (Being a Canyon you just don't see it coming). When it landed everyone just hugged each other as it was so humbling and emotional.

Well worth doing the helicopter trip from Vegas airport, you get the full benefit but doesn't take up too much of your vacation time.

Think we went with 'Heli-USA' including a scenic route to/from the GC, then landing in the bottom of the GC and having a picnic, then returning to Vegas. Would recommend doing one of the last flights of the day as it becomes sunset over the GC and on the return flight you see Vegas all lit up from the air. One of the best experiences anywhere in the world.

Did this too and highly recommend it. The music in your headphones as you come up to the big reveal of the canyon itself is quite something.. plus the swoop down to the river. And by doing the sunset tour, you really get good value with the Strip looking spectacular on the way back. I got a really, really cheap deal to Vegas in January one year when I was skint so the chopper trip was a major extravangance but, as I thought at the time, it's the one thing that I'll never ever forget. Has to be done.

We went last week and price didn't come into it they told us where we had to sit based on each individuals weight and equal distribution around the chopper as you rightly say.

If you take one of the small planes rather than the helicopter, you can get a trip over Lake Mead (flying over the Rainbow Bridge) then on to Monument Valley, where you land and go on a scenic ride around. Then fly back over the Grand Canyon. You only get to see the sheer size of it from the air.

We flew from Page though, not Vegas.
