Search for: Norton Anti Virus 2003 Pro - XP on Kazaa - it's got all the bits you need (Firewall, Anti-virus etc.) - download it for nowt.

I would send anyone the FULL installation program but it's 41MB.

Or for a £10 donation to the REMF I'll send it to you on CD.

PM me with your details (I am out now 'til Thursday).

Or you could go to zonealarm.com and download one for free. Though they regularly send e-mails telling you how to upgrade to 'Pro' for a discounted fee !!

If you're on Kazaa or similar and you don't have a firewall up and an UP TO DATE virus checker running than you get what you deserve!

If you ain't got them then you could buy a PC mag with them on the coverdisk and then copy the apps to your hard drive (So's they install faster if your PC's running time is an issue) There are trials of Zone Alarm Pro 4 and Panda Antivirus on the front of PC Plus 207, for instance.

Or download Getright (cos it lets you resume downloads) and then get hold of Zone Alarm (the normal one is free, the Pro version you pay for) and Norton AntiVirus, which you pay for but it's quality and any road up, the trial of it will sort you out for a while. If you're really feeling paranoid, get summat like Ad Aware as well to chop up the spyware that the normal version of Kazaa and Imesh contain.

MS03-026 hit just before I went on holiday, but our guys in the states were hopping up and down about it and I expect we'll have been patched up by now. I certainly am here.

The firewall stuff in XP is OK as it is a stateful firewall, but without too much messing about, Zone Alarm is easier to get going.

Best solution is to run inside a hardware Firewall / Router, which will use NAT to hide your computers from the bad guys. I'm geeky enough to do that. But I get paid to be that geeky.

And do update (like everyone above has said).

On XP, Win2k or NT, be on the latest service pack and then install all the updates through the MS update site. If you install them, the annoying messages go away!! :p

If you aren't on XP, Win2K or NT, seriously consider it, the NT line is far more stable than the Win9x line, particularly Windows ME. Or you could just use a Mac.

Oh no he's not, Geeks don't use Windows.....

Anyway, I advise that you get a magazzine cover CD with a decent AV package, not Norton or McAfee but Kapersky or R-AV, and Ad-Aware on it. Turn on PC, unplug ADSL line or whatever so your not on the net and clean up the PC with the two of them. Then also do a ctrl-alt-delete to get the task manager and look for any processes started by your username, and kill the lot of them, and see how long you can keep it up for.

Downgrading to Windows 2000 or upgrading to Windows 2003 locks off these holes, as does using any other companies operating system
