…update from BBC Breakfast, who have now gone ‘Full Partridge.’

The main anchor, Mike, has just concluded a live link with Ben, who is reporting from a pig farm in Norfolk.

Mike: “My challenge to you this morning Ben is to put some sun cream on a pig!”
Ben: [looking a little uneasy] “Err, I don’t have any sun cream Mike. I’ll do my best…”
Mike: “Probably best to check with the farmer first, Ben. He might not like it.”

I have heard this said so many times. It is ridiculous. We live in a temperate climate. Our infrastructure is set up to cope with a temperate climate. My brother lives in Canada and where he lives they have freezing temperatures from autumn until spring. They cope. Why? Because they have invested squillions in infrastructure to keep the country going because they have to. Does anyone here think that the government should spend a comparable amount of money on infrastructure so that we can avoid two bad snow days once every few years? It would be dumb.

Similar to heat. Our homes are set up to keep us warm. So if they get hot then it traps the heat whereas homes in hot countries are the opposite. We don’t have air con. We don’t have fans fitted when we don’t have air con. We have carpets rather than cold floors. Etc etc.

Our roads and rail are designed for the temperature we live in etc

Freak weather is not about us being soft and struggling. It is that our infrastructure just isn’t set up for it.

To be fair, you make some very valid points , re; houses and infrastructure.

Global warming is a thing. True the earth moves through cycles however we are giving it a massive helping hand which it really doesn’t need. Every extra degree that we give it will **** us over big time.

Taking precautions in extreme heat isn’t snowflake, it’s common sense ffs. Try telling some poor ******* working on a building site or the roads that it’s nothing to worry about.

Saying all that the media are playing it up big time but it’s the weather and we are British, it’s our moral duty to go overboard about the weather.

FWIW, I trained for a month in the artic and a week or so in the desert in North Africa. It’s the artic for me every time, you can always put another layer on …

The hours people work varies abroad. In France two hour lunch breaks and work later in the day. In Greece everything closes for 3-4 hours but then they work until 8pm.
Houses are painted white to deflect the heat rather than absorb it. Many houses have shutters which they close in the middle of the day to keep the heat out.

But you’re comparing traditionally hot countries. Germany isn’t a traditionally hot country and we have topped 35 degrees a number of times this year already without the level of hysteria and wall-to-wall coverage of the UK; I think this is Justice’s point. It will be back in Berlin on Wednesday and it will be 37 degrees but I can guarantee you there won’t be multiple threads about this on the local football internet chat sites.

I've been to the Black Forest on holiday and it is very hot. Berlin may not be but there are parts of Germany which get hot weather regularly.

BBC Breakfast doing their usual “there’s a high chance we’re all going to DIE so don’t do THIS or THIS” - and then doing exactly that - reporting that they specialise in during periods of extreme weather.

The main presenter just looked earnestly down the camera and urged people not to light fires today, then handed over live to a reporter at a campsite in Exmoor who enthusiastically pointed at a smoking fire-pit and said “morning Mike! We’ve got the bacon and eggs on the go already!”

BBC are amazing there’s no news apart from the weather.. let’s show everyone what the weather is by having everyone outside, telling everyone to stay in.

We Brits are known for our obsession with the weather and we are laughed at by the rest of the World.

Parts of Germany are like an oven sometimes.

Yes, but the responsibility for his men's lives is still there. :)

Edit to add, that photo from Marsden Moor shows a white helmet in the front line.

Well precisely back to the original point it’s only for two days. News channels having reporters all around the country to get the latest temp it’s truly bizarre.

All joking aside, the warnings aren't for everybody, but the warnings are valid for some. If they don't apply to you, crack on, but leave those alone it does apply to.

In 1976 the heatwave caused a 20% rise in excess deaths. People with blood pressure or heart problems are at risk so the warnings are valid for those people. Be grateful you aren't one of them.

I know but that was much longer than 2 days (2 weeks+ of ‘extreme’ temps plus much longer just ‘hot’, not 2 days. The hype for such a short period is ridiculous.

100% this……..we must (again) be a laughing stock across much of the world. Blanket news coverage, grim warnings of death and destruction and growing hysteria as a result……for two hot days

Relax, they're still too busy laughing at the state of our politics, Bozo the clown, Brexit etc.

I see the RAC are advising against travel unless it's absolutely necessary. My wife asked me whether we should really be going to the beach, in case our car over heats. I pointed out that in a few weeks time we'll be in Greece, hiring a (far inferior) car in temperatures probably 8 or 9 degrees warmer than this, but I'm presuming she isn't concerned about out car over heating there?

I understand this heat can be dangerous and people should be aware of the dangers, but some of the hysteria has been a bit ridiculous.

I do agree. I’ve been on a bit of a wind up but for some professionals and groups, this heat poses a real threat.

For those that can, enjoy the weather. Otherwise, stay sensible and stay hydrated. Vital to hydrate .

The RAC warning made me laugh………I’ve worked in Dubai a fair bit where high 40s is a daily occurrence in summer, everyone drives everywhere (too hot to walk, obvs). Don’t think the modern car is overly susceptible to breaking down in high 30s temps :lol:

You're less likely to be stuck in traffic jams in Greece apart from Central Athens where they have odd and even number plates on alternate days (to keep pollution down)
The queue for Camber Sands was ridiculous yesterday.

To be fair the RAC probably have an insight into how unprepared the average motorist is in this country?
