None of the above.

For future proofing, I'd look to hard-wire ethernet cabling throughout your house which will ensure you can push whatever you want, including hi-def video, around the house as required.

High volumes of data via wireless is S-L-0-W.

Utterly this, and don't be skimpy on the cable - I recently did the whole house with 4 Cat 6 runs to each point. 2 to carry video/audio etc etc, 1 for a network point and 1 spare - That's the relatively inexpensive part, getting the hardware to distribute your Sky, DVD, HTPC etc is quite expensive but you don't have to do that now, just make sure you future proof and get your cabling in....

Ok guys....completely off topic but know you are a sensible and wise bunch.

Have just bought a house and am contemplating installing some sort of entertainment/sound system throughout the house.
Couple of issues I am mulling over.....

Do I hard wire speakers into the ceilings in each room and wire them back to some kind of control suite?
Or
Should I go for a wireless system such as the Sonos speaker and bridge package??

Don't want to spend silly money but while the house is in bits am thinking now is the time to install!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

there's a million answers to this question and I wouldn't advise without chatting to you and seeing your house but I can recommend B&W (Bowers & Wilkins) on 01903 264141. They don't just make speakers, they advise, sell and install systems :albion2:

AV Forums is the place to go for advice , don't be put off by some of the threads which over analyse and give you second doubts about a product when in reality there is nothing to worry about if you're not a geek.

Agreed av forums is the best source but I know 2 people with Sonos who absolutely love it, unless you live in a nuclear bunker with 3 foot reinforced walls then hard wired Ethernet is the way.

Until last year I was a network cabler, a lot of new build offices are going for cat 7 now, it is a bit pricey but 1 cable can run 4 devices nowadays, ( the end is different to a rj45 so make sure the devices can take it, might be worth looking at, I'd recommend cat 6a as a minimum for cabling but you need deep back boxes to fit the modules in and terminate them properly. With 25mm conduit if you're using containment. 20mm conduit is very tight to get 2 cables down depending on the bends in the conduit.
