I for one will be watching

BBC 3 21:00 tonight

1: Ambushed

This opening part of the series tells the story of a close-knit group of friends from 3 Platoon, 1st Battalion Royal Anglian regiment, who were sent to Helmand province in 2007. For most of them it was their first experience of war. The whole tour was filmed on a helmet camera by the platoon's sergeant, who captured the moment when one of his men, 19-year-old Private Chris Gray, was killed in a Taliban ambush. The film explores the effects of his death on both his mates in the platoon and his family back in the UK.

Background info to the series here BBC - BBC TV blog: Our War: Dealing with death on the frontline in Afghanistan

this is currently to close to home, my nephew is a Royal Marine and is in K company of 42 Commando and in his 2nd month of 6 on his first tour to Afgan, in the last week he has lost 4 members of 42 commando "family" and the latest one on Sunday was from his Company and a good friend, the current mood in our family is a bit down as it seems that the Taliban summer offensive has started and you just dont know whats going to happen next, there is a great site on Facebook called Herrick 14 which gives daily updates on our progress along with photos, but also sadly brings you first the fatalities direct from the MOD web site. I will watch tonight but with a bit of trepidation as I am not really sure I want to know what he is going through. I spoke with him yesterday and he was as expected very down and he said the mood of his fellow marines was rock bottom due to the 4 deaths, they are assigned to One Rifles regiment and they have also lost 2 men in the last two weeks, so 6 in total, not including the poor chap from the Scottish Highlanders who died Saturday. I feel it is going to be a long 4 months until he returns.

Looks brilliant. So I don't suppose there's any chance of anyone watching The Fairy Jobmother on C4 at the same time. I (and everyone else here) worked really hard on that :(

Will be watching my brothers in the military so wanna get a better insight, allways thought he was a desk jockey till I saw footage from his helmet camera bullets pinging of the dirt around him lol made me realise maybe he does more than he tells us. He's currently in training for his third tour of afghan but even when he was away on tour he used to phone once a week and ask what the Albion score was. True legend in my eyes

Amazing and very humbling programme.

Cant believe it was relegated to BBC Three, but then again its no Apprentice or Britain's Got Talent!

RIP Chris Gray and all the other soldiers who will never come home.

If this was the first showing of the documentary then yes, pretty poor of the BBC to deem it only worth of BBC 3 purely based on viewing figures although obviously a quality production. A very good insight into the realities of war. I knew someone that lost their life in Afghanistan, only finding out via a headline story in the Argus. Proper heroes indeed.
