If you attack us I think we’ll do well. In many ways playing historical big teams with fan’s expecting attacking football works for us.
Ajax struggles with teams that are very organised in defence and are waiting for the counter. If Brighton is able to frustrate Ajax by keeping it all closed around the 16 and by not getting them in the rhythm of playing around, you guys can do well. Ajax plays with a lot of space behind the backline so if Brighton has a style that can make use of it there is definitely an opportunity there.

Really really excited for Ajax. Was my dream tie and it'll come true!

Less fearful of facing Chuba Akpom than Kudus though.
Haha no one here knew who he was and he didn't have his working permit yet so we don't know how he will play. In Brobbey we have a very strong striker but currently he lacks the one thing an Ajax striker needs: goals. As an Ajax striker you often get a lot of opportunities to score and if you don't you have to be lethal. By becoming the top scorer in the Championship I guess they want to turn up the heat for Brobbey. Although I heard Akpom played more as a 10 then a striker?

Thank you for taking the trouble to reach out to us, for reasons unknown to me Ajax has always been my second team on the continent, wether because as a 21 year old in 1990 I enjoyed the hospitality of your city after dark, use to love throwing the Guilders away in the peep shows or an episode of Only Fools and Horses ‘To Hull & Back” either way it’s a dream draw and we respect your city and club history!
That's great to hear! We are up for some amazing nights!

Indeed. They went for Liverpool and Napoli last year and got absolutely murdered. Napoli beat them 6-1 in Amsterdam if I remember right. And Ajax are arguably weaker now.

Brighton would be heavy favourites as it stands.
Especially the match against Napoli is giving me gastric acid thinking about it again. It was horrendous. If you compare it to the team of that moment and the coach we had, yes you are definitely favourites, especially at home. But with a new coach and a completely new squad I cannot say yet how Ajax will play. We bought some quality players but also a lot of unknowns. We have to wait how this coach will create a team out of this.

I think that Ajax supporters will feel disappointed about their third place finish last season after such domination of the Eredivisie, however as you say it is a time for rebuilding and hopefully reaching those high levels again.
I would like to ask whether the match at the Johan Cruyff Arena will likely be entertaining for the children, as we've also have AEK Athens/Marseille in our respective group which could perhaps be less safe, will it be fine to take a child?

I think that last sentence ("Although I heard Akpom played more as a 10 then a striker") may have got lost in translation. He played 10 games (for us) as a striker, but never scored a goal (or even looked like scoring one, as far as I remember) and was mainly rated as rubbish. The only place he's scored regularly was at Middlesbrough in our second level league. Still good luck to you with him (except against us, of course).
It would be a bit shit if he scores against us now!

It was hugely disappointing yes. Especially because we don't get the amount of money as a Premier League club so for Ajax it's essential to get Champions League income. The coming year will be very important because the top 2 spots will have a guaranteed placement in the Champions League and with the new CL setup the incomes are even higher. We have been spoiled for some years and having a bad season is part of it but it has to go better now. There is just a lot of uncertainty how to club will perform with so many new players and a new coach.

It can definitely be entertaining for children as well, depending on where you are seated of course. The biggest part of the stadium has 'regular' fans and there aren't stories of people being hunted down streets because they wear a different shirt, something that happens in different countries. I don't know about the Brighton fans so it will also depend on the tension they may cause in the city and the relationship between Ajax and Brighton fans. There is never a guarantee but Athens and Marseille are less likely to be safe.

(Reposting a bit that I wrote in the discussion thread here) Hi Brighton fans! As suggested by Bozza, I'm starting this thread to introduce myself and to provide you guys with everything you'd like to know about Ajax, or to bash on us, whatever floats your boat. But I'd also love to know more about the team we'll be facing.

I'm an Ajax fan and I’m keen to provide to discussions with more information from our side of the sea! I really like Brighton and how they have been performing the last season(s). A club with history who didn’t sell their souls to oil money yet. ;) I can’t wait for our clubs to meet in the European encounters, let’s hope they’ll be historic! I’ll be rooting for Brighton in the PL and I will be following Brighton more closely. I look forward to follow the discussions on the board.

This transfer periods has been one of the craziest I ever experienced. We are used to selling our top players every year but last year the guys that have been bought did not deliver. The downfall of Ajax after some amazing Champions League years started when legendary TD Marc Overmars had to leave the club after sending naughty pictures of himself to Ajax employees.

With a new technical director in the name of 'Diamond eyes' Sven Mislintat (former Arsenal), a new coach and staff, we spend well over 110 million euro's and basically bought a completely new squad for the coming season. Names that most fans never heard of so we have absolutely no idea how this will turn out in the end but it'll sure be interesting.

One thing is certain, European nights in the Johan Cruijff ArenA are something else. The buzz and atmosphere is so different from our Dutch league matches. Traditionally the Slavenkoor is always played during our European nights so you'll be sure to see this when we meet in Amsterdam. I provided an impression from the Slavenkoor in the video below to get the hype started!

Did Overmars ever send any pics of his ovens
