HD TV why?

HD TV is there really a point to it! im sure when more programs are being brodcasted in HD it may well be worth it but other than games concoles and the new HD DVD and blu ray disc i dont see the poin in it saying that i still brought one or am i just being naive and stupid and HD TV's are great?

I have had Sky HD on a 42" plasma since the World Cup. Superb picture, worth the money imho. If you like live football just about all the matches (incuding BBC FAC) are broadcast in HD, the clarity is awesome, you can see the blades of grass, you would easily recognise somebody you knew in the crowd.

Sound is 5.1 dolby digital, I have the sound coming through my home theate system, giving a real stadium feel. Only trouble is a crap match is still crap, no matter how high the definition.

When watching HD films picture quality is much better than DVD. Number of channels could be better, but I will definately renew my subscription when it runs out in the summer. HD box includes Sky+, pause live TV, record 2 channels at once etc etc, also just started this week Anytime TV, the HD box downloads popular TV programmes and films in the background, allowing you to watch whenever you want.

btw, before anybody says it, yes I have got a life, I run my own business and have 6 kids.

Not at the moment for me, I am happy with my Sony 21" flatscreen normal TV, might consider it in a few years time when technology has advanced and it doesn't cost the earth. At present my priorities don't extend to paying thousands for some flash tv system just because it is state of the art and the latest fad, more concerned with making my mortgage payments, getting repairs done on my house and saving up for a decent holiday. Guess it just depends on your means and priorities in life, HD TV, it can wait.

In reality, the bigger the TV you get the more necessary HD is. 42" is the limit for watching a normal digital broadcast without it looking like the image has been made out of Lego.

Once you go to 50" the quality looks appalling, especially if you are sitting anywhere near it.

Having said that HD in a big plasma is truly a sight to behold! Especially sport.


My 28" supermarket TV is packing up so I'll be getting a 42" HD plasma. I can't justify the cost of SkyHD though yet as with a 2 year old I don't get the chance to watch it much. However, when I do upgrade I would like my TV to be compatible.

I've gone round and round on this - really wanting an HD LCD for my xbox.... but every time I come to the same conclusion.

Personally, I'm not prepared to pay even more money for Sky so until there are many more HD channels free (scheduled to be another five years yet) I'm sticking with the old-fashioned CRT tv.

For anything less than HD they offer a superior picture, and are now great value.

Im sorry, there is no way that its worth an extra tenner a month sky subscription to watch footy which looks marginally better than normal tv.

I pay the bastards £50 a month as it is. Give it a year or two and itll be free.

I've got a 50" rear projection Sagem and the picture is suprisingly good on most non HD stuff. Of course you have to sit the right distance away, but sitting any closer hurts the eyes anyway and you can't take in the whole screen. HD stuff via my 360 and HTPC does look fanfuckingtastic though.

Answer, it looks amazing.

Football, BBC HD, Sky 1 HD, documentries on NG, Sky Movies HD and if you have an "upscaling DVD" player, you will see things in your favourite movies you never saw before.

As is always the case though, buy wisely, don't go for a cheapo set, some of them only go up to 720, you need 1080 and if you can afford it, go for the 1080p versions.

HD is f***ing DON. Useless if youhave a tiny screen but if you own a large LCD, Plasma etc then its worth every penny.

Plasma's are susceptible to screenburn when there is a "frozen" image held on part of the screen for a long period of time (such as a computer game panel, or Sky Sports News banners). I've heard newer plasma's arn't as vulnerable to this as the older ones, but it can still be a factor. You end up with a permanent "shadow" of the image burned onto the screen - and there's NOTHING you can do about it once its there.

Which is why I went for a 37" Philips LCD. Its a PEACH.

Not bothered subscribing to HDTV yet, mind. I'm not prepared to pay another £300 for the box plus £10 per month subscription. It'll come down eventually, just like Sky+ did.

If you are playing computer games, or watching Sky Sports News, long enough to burn an image into the TV screen then I think that kind of says something...spend more time on NSC!
