Does anyone know when the BBC will start charging for their HD broadcasts... or will they not?

I should read the question! I don't think they can charge for HD, as it is paid for by the licence fee

Didn't read the question either. But the answer is never as long as it is still funded by a licence fee.

They're not going to charge, nor will you need to use Sky equipment to get them - hence you won't need to pay Sky's HD rental fee.

Must say it looks stunning on a non-Sky box, anyway.

For info, the BBC Planet Earth series is stunning in HD. What live footie will be like is another matter.

Just wondered because the BBC HD channel on Sky has a tel number regarding enquiries... along the same lines as the SKY HD channels info.

You will need a new Sky box and so its not free.. as it is Digital it cannot be recieved through a standard Aerial...

From the BBC website.

How can I receive HD?

HD is transmitted digitally. Each step in the transmission chain must be high definition to produce the end result on your screen. So you will need:

to be watching special HD broadcasts;
a special new HD set top box to decode the HD signals;
a TV set which is "HD Ready", meaning it can display HD pictures.
Initially HD will only be available on satellite and cable. For advice please contact your cable or satellite TV provider, or electrical retailer.

You don't need a Sky box, and obviously you're going to need a new decoder as older ones don't have MPEG4 processors or HD capable outputs.

And if you're one of the 450 people who got accpeted who live within a decent range of the Crystal Palace transmitter (Wozza is one); or you're able to get hold of a suitable box elsewhere, you -can- get it on an aerial.

Contridicting yourself I think!

According to the BBC website and others you will need a sky box, HD is not transmittable through a normal aerial.

They're oh, wrong, and wrong.

Firstly, you need a HD-capable SATELLITE box. Now, despite Sky's best brainwashing efforts, Satellite and Sky are not synonyms.

I'm getting it perfectly fine here on a Pace DS810XE (not a Sky box), and Humax make suitable kit (again, not a Sky box)

And an aerial is just something which receives signals in the VHF or UHF bands. There is no such thing as a "digital aerial" over an "analogue aerial", despite what lying installers often claim. HD has been sent over digital terrestrial transmission since the early part of this century, and is common in the US and Australia, and indeed analogue high definition terrestrial existed in Japan in the 1980's

To add to that, the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 are all doing terrestrial high definition tests from the Crystal Palace transmitter.

HDTV can be transmitted over the airwaves ("through a normal aerial"), but Freeview doesn't have enough spare bandwidth and won't have until analog signals are switched off.

(However, it's being tested this year - I am one of the testers. I'm getting a HD Freeview box on Sunday).

Might be wrong, but I would guess that a non-Sky HD-compatible box could pick-up the BBC signal from the Astra satellite (I think Humax do one).

Started writing that before you posted. :p

Let me know what make/model of box they give you when you get it, will you? RTÉ are going to be doing hi-def DTT tests here soon and I'm considering getting in a box on spec - because the BBCs transmission system is the most complex around and if a box can do it, it can probably do RTÉs too.

Sorry I listened to the lying bastard in Comets before doing reserch...

I am waiting delivery of my Hitachi 42" Plasma Tomorrow.

I used Comets just to view the items then bought on the internet and saved over 1600 quid.
