I watched The Longest Day the other week, which breaks into subtitles when it goes to the German officers. I barely even noticed I was reading them. Someone mentioned Downfall, same with that. When you skim-read it hardly registers with me that I'm reading during a film, its a piece of piss to get used to them.

My dad's hearing isn't great these days, so he has subtitles on most stuff. I think some people carry a notion that you'll somehow be "missing" seeing the film if you're reading subtitles, but you're really not. In fact with some of the mumbling that goes on in movies it can be a positive enhancement.

I thought the US Office was pretty good, at least until Jim and Pam married, then quality plummeted, but we still got six or so great seasons.

Completely agree - the US Office is genius for a few seasons and then it tails off massively when it starts to focus on the sub-par characters as if they're suddenly the whole point of the show. Certain episodes stand out as being utter genius from start to finish, but a lot of the out of office scenarios are tedious and unfunny. The whole Creed character really annoys me, he's dreadful and the decline in humanity in Andy was a shame. The final season was very good, once Kelly and Ryan were gone and off the writing staff as well.

There is absolutely no need for an English language version of Parasite. It's a South Korean film - leave it as is and anyone uncultured enough to be put off by the subtitles will just have to miss out on a brilliant story, well told.

That’s the British version of the film. The American version had the Germans speaking English as the director (rightly or wrongly) said that Americans wouldn't tolerate so many subtitled scenes.

As for me, a teacher of French at my school showed the class La Cage aux Folles one Christmas. I easily adapted to the subtitles and have continued watching subtitled films every since.

I was supposed to see Parasite tomorrow but something has come up, grr! Hopefully next week. If not, iTunes in due course. Sounds like one not to be missed.

Some people have bizarre prejudices regarding films. I’ve heard of people refusing to watch subtitled or black and white films (and silent ones too, presumably), but the weirdest has to be people who set arbitrary dates and refuse to see anything made before them. I’ve heard about this a couple of times. A friend said he worked with a woman who refuses to see any film made before 1980. I asked if that meant she’d boycott Jaws but be fine with Jaws 3 and Jaws the Revenge and the answer came back, yes.

I am a fan of both the UK Office and the US Office. I found it a little awkward watching the first two seasons of the US Office always comparing it to the UK version. I think from the middle of season 3 the US version finds its feet and is great TV. The Dwight Schrute character is just fantastic and always has me in stitches.

I love both versions for different reasons. I don't watch Season 1 of the US Office, because it's a carbon copy which is total rubbish. But Season 2, right from the Dundies at the start, is brilliant TV. It goes downhill after Season 3/4/5 but that's kind of to be expected. It goes back to Ricky Gervais' point about being better to leave people wanting more, rather than wishing there was less. I just don't enjoy some of the lesser office characters and the biggest issue is the inconsistencies over time. I know Scott's Tots is meant to be horrific, but I really struggled with that episode. It was too cringy for me, by a significant margin.
